Help with New Truck Purchase
Hi all,
I sold my two beaters, and I am looking at the new Tacomas. I know someone that is in the car biz and he can score me good deals. I gave him the following parameters: 5 speed extended cab Locking rear diff What else should I have ordered with it? Thanks, Mark |

considering the Tacomas come with 6-speeds, I'd recommend that route.
Unless you are referring to the 5-speed auto.

a front differential! Otherwise you'll end up with the Pre-runner package, 2wd with a rear locker.

5 speed manuals only come with the 2.7L I4. 6 speed comes with the 4.0L V6. I would highly recommend the 4.0L, if you can afford it. The 2.7L isn't bad at all, but compared to the 4.0, it pales in comparison. So to sum up, your list should look like:
1) Extended Cab 4x4 2) 6 speed V6 3) TRD Off-Road package with rear locker |

Hi all,
Thanks for the input. I may have to look at used units as credit score may or may not be there. The car broker I know may want to put me behind a Ford Ranger due to pricing. If I were to go the used route, what codes should I be looking for if I am looking at 4Runners, Tacos, or Tundras. I am looking for manual if possible automatic if I have no choice. Need to score a vehicle before Friday. Thanks, Mark |

My opinion is to get any Toyota you can afford before you buy a Ranger. Personally I'd get a mid 1980s rusted out minitruck for $800 before I'd buy another Ranger.

To really narrow your search, if money is an issue, consider earlier model tacomas. Maybe '98-04, assuming you don't need 4dr, look at ext cabs. The auto is just fine, unless it's your personal preference. But it's going to be easier to find a tacoma with e-locker than a 4runner. Forget the ranger.

new truck
Rangers suck.
![]() I got the 07 trd access cab auto. It's great. I wheel it as much as possible and the e-locker works really well. The 05 and up got a little bigger and stabler I think and the 4.0 is plenty. You'll never in a ranger what you can do in a Taco. Buy a new one, and beat the hell out of! __________________ 2007 TACO TRD 4X4 WITH REAR LOCKER,WALKER EVAN C/O'S,ALLPRO 3" LEAFS,ALLPRO PLATE BUMPER,BFG Mud/terrains 33'S, ALL-PRO SLIDERS, MANY SCRATCHES AND A FEW DENTS ![]() MANY MODS TO COME$$$$ |

X2 on the Ranger suck factor. I bought an extended cab 4x4 Ranger new in 2002. Why you ask? Because I couldn't afford a new Tacoma, and was too stupid to buy a used one. Anyway, I went through three trannys in less than 36k miles, and the passenger side door leaked from the dealer spanking new!! They never fixed it. Screw a ranger get a used taco if that is all you can afford. Just my $.02.
