2000 4Runner CD player help

I need to know what wires on the CD player wiring harness are what.

Because the red and yellow on the new CD player are not hot when I touch the wires together. I figured the CD player would turn on with the red wires touching, but nothing happens.

And now I'm frustrated. RAARRARARRRRRR.

Thank you for your help.

Don't quote me on this... but I seem to remember that red is switched (ie. on when ignition is to ACC or RUN) and yellow is hot all the time (to maintain memory, etc.) If neither of those leads has juice, maybe you should check the fuse. It's really easy to burn up a fuse when you have a rats nest of wires sticking out of the dash. Been there, done that.

Anyone know why there are 2 cables that look like they're related to the antenna?

Because there's only one slot to put an antenna in on the new stereo. On the OEM stereo there's a slot for the antenna, and just to the right of it there's another, smaller jack for a smaller wire.

HELP ME PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE.

Recall that a 2000 4Runner stereo requires the in-dash amplifier to work in any other vehicle. This stereo has no built-in amp. I also know that a 2001 4Runner stereo won't work (at least in a plug-in fashion) in a '98 4Runner - they thoughtfully changed the wiring in about 2000 on the 3rd gens. I can't help with individual wiring questions. Try using Google (?)

Thanks for your help. I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I found a website called the12volt.com and there's a guy walking me through it who's really helpful.

I'm a moron for not getting the wiring harness....

I'm an aviation electronics tech. I first got interested in electronics while installing car stereos. I would like to offer a couple of suggestions.

1. Please don't check voltage by touching the wires together. With computerized electronics it really doesn't take much to do damage. A lot of the damage won't be apparent right away but it is there. You can buy a cheap multi-meter for $12. You can then also use the meter to ring out the harness and find which wires are going to the speakers (of course if you pull out the speakers to ring it you will see which color of wire is going were).

2. You should also be able to get all of the information you need from a Haynes manual for about $15. I don't know firsthand about a 4Runner but I recently had a 91 Aerostar (2003 was a very rough year financially) and the Haynes manual had all of the stereo wiring schematics. They were actually very accurate. The Aerostar had a hokey rear control that was even accurate.

I know these solutions are not free but it is the right way to do it. You'll save a lot of time and effort in the long run. By the way, I recommend against the screw on wire splices. Window splices are okay and I think you can get them with Autozone. I also recommend heat shrink over the connections. A lot of car fires are caused by incorrect wiring. If you have kids this is especially important. Cars can burn so fast the parents can't get the kids out of car seats. Sorry to be a buzz kill but I think it is important to take this stuff seriously.
