07' Tundra tailgate issue.

My 07' Tundra 5.7 had it's tailgate latch locking mechanism break. Already?, and with only 2500 miles. I brought it into the dealer, and they said they are expecting a recall to be issued from Toyota soon. Mine was the fifth they have had to repair so far. And the mechanic told me this is where the Tundra "tailgate rattle" comes from. A plastic clip on the unlocking mechanism loosens up; and this is the piece that rattles. After it rattles loose enough, it falls off. At that point, you can't open the tailgate. It was an easy fix, mechanic replaced the clip, and epoxied where it clips on. But the service manager said that Toyota will probably reengineer the clip, or make it out of a different material in the future.

No camshaft issue on mine yet, and it tows my Land Rover to off-road trips. 8000 lbs with the trailer. And lots of smoky brakestand burnouts from the lights. lol. (fingers now crossed).

New models have growing pains and if ya read TS Forum for 07's they seem to complain a LOT and they should but nothing seems too bad but it is NO MYTH that new year model vehicles have issues, i have had several of them and once you buy it they become something you have to deal with cause it's yours now! My 06 has had only a few issues and would probably be just as happy if i could get past the 07 Dodge front end and muscle car gauges that someone let a Detroit Engineer that has defected to Toyota design much less release! supposed to be a TSB coming out for this issue soon!

You drive a Rover and your bitching about Toyota reliability issues?

It's a brand new truck, it's gonna have some issues. That's why I leased mine.

Toyota recognizes the issue and will recall the truck to fix it. GM and Ford have HUGE engine issues they refuse to acknowledge, let alone issue a recall. Those companies will be the first to shout from the mountaintop that Toyota has more recalls than they do.

I look forward to that recall. I hate the way that thing rattles.

Recalls and TSB's 2 totally seperate items and Tailgate will never make a recall status unless MOTHER ROLLS out the tailgate going down I-40, which i venture to say will not happen but if you are in warranty status just take it in because TSB's are only fixed if you complain about that item during warranty period. A recall is a Huge safety issue that can be done on any model, just had one done on my 1993 PU Steering Control Rod? did not pay a dime because it was a recall. Why wait for someone to call you cause that will never happen with tailgate issue, ya gotta take it in and get it fixed ASAP!! Toyota hopes you do not bring it in but if ya do they will fix it hopefully with out messing it more than it is! Dealer gets paid by Toyota for fixin this junk and they love to practise on new truck. Just hope ya do not get a Camry oil filter installed on a 5.7L Tundra, same style cartridge but about half the length, and a dealership did this!!
