whining noise. help please

i have just bought a 1997 colorado (prado) automatic 3.0 TD. i'm very plesaed with it apart from a whining noise that seems to be coming from the lefthand front footwell. it does it in all gears, neutral, park, hi and lo range, difflock, OD in fact every combination of everything. its not the fan or air con. once driving it's not so noticable as other noises drown it out. sometimes it doesn't happen 'til it's done a few miles.
some have said it may be a vacuum hose located somewhere behind the glovebox. also the fuel return valve has been mentioned. until my workshop manual arrives i don't know where to look. can you help?

thanks.

funny, but not really helpful. actually, having just come from 4 years of driving a landrover 110, she's well pleased.

anyway, back to the noise. sometimes when cold it doesn't happen but then starts after about 20 minutes.

any ideas?

Does the noise only happen when your driving? Have you checked maybe your CV Boots, front axles, etc? I am thinking it could have something to do with your drivetrain as you describe the issue as happening through all gears. I would check everything up front, maybe your tires are not balanced.

it makes the noise when parked as well as when driving. sometimes it doesn't start until the engines warmed up.

I have the same noise you describe. I have a manual gearbox Prado 11/1997 hdj90. The only thing I think that is related to the noise is the engine revs. I have gave-up trying to find it, so if you find it you have a case of beer from me!

ah ha! on top of the injector pump is a banjo bolt on the fuel return side which contains a spring loaded ball valve. the spring weakens causing the ball bearing to resonate. i removed the bolt and took the ball and spring out. then i stretched the spring slightly and replaced. the spring is similar to that inside a ball point pen. put it all back together again and hey presto!

it's hard to believe that this could cause such a whistling noise coming up through the footwell but it does (did).

let me know if this works and i'll PM you my address for that case of beer!!

bear in mind i live in th UK

I had this banjo bolt replaced earlier this year after a lot of searching and headache, and the noise disappeared.

What finally solved the problem was a tech guy at my local Toyota dealer that remembered a recall from Toyota on the banjo bolt in the late 90's. I don't have the recall note here, but I'll try to look it up later.

try taking the top off the banjo bolt and stretching the spring while you're waiting. it will take you 5 minutes and you'll find out if that's the problem straight away.
