3" Exhaust! Mmmmmmmmmm...............
Greetings all.
I've just had my factory exhaust replaced with a new mandrel bent 3" system including the dump pipe. The improvments are not devestatingly dramatic. There are improvements. The Turbo is spooling up about 400 rpm earlier ie the power is coming on sooner, and I am not having to change down to 2nd gear on a hill that I drive on daily, as I am now able to pull up it in 3rd. It's only been 1 day since the fitting and I'm still identifying the improvements to the performance. So I'll keep you all informed as things progress, and perhaps some photos. Also picking up my tuning module later this week, the old girl won't know what to do with all the extra go. I had a bit of luck with the company installing the system, they originally priced a 2.5" system and when the dump pipe arrived it was a 3" outlet. They could have necked down to a 2.5" but decided that it would be a much better system if they kept the 3" right through so that's what they did and only charged me for the 2.5" one. You have got to be happy with that kind of service. So if you need a new exhaust and your in the neighbourhood of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia try "Maroochy Exhaust Centre". Bloody good work. Regards D.T. __________________ LC Prado GXL-TD 95 Series. Finally got some pics of the 3"
Here ya go guys and gals.
![]() From the back of the turbo. ![]() Down under the body. ![]() Through the little muffler, straight through not baffled. ![]() Up over the rear axle. A bit twisty here but all good and clear of the axle housing under full flex. ![]() And the black stuff comes out here. Much better performance than the standard. Turbo spools up much faster and the engine appear to have considerably more torque when travelling up hills. I highly recommend this upgrade to anyone considering it. Dhula,
It's a little louder at around 80km/hr but not uncomfortable. The note produced is a lot deeper and a little louder particularly when accelerating hard. It still has that little turbo whistle. My 20 year old son is quite impressed, if that is any indication. Performance is up of course but I'm also using a DPChip now. I'll post some fuel figures when I get through the first tank load. Which won't be long now. Regards D.T. __________________ LC Prado GXL-TD 95 Series. It'll be interesting to see how fuel usage is effected D.T.
I've just worked out my last and it comes to 11.6l/100km (about 24 MPG) That included 400 kms of good country driving with a few hills and 420 kms of city/town (Melbourne and Bendigo)driving. No wheeling tho (bugger) |

Fuel Consumption
Dhula,
First load of fuel was inconclusive because I was running around like a 17 year old with his first 4WD and Chevy conversion. I have the chip dialled in a bit better now and I'm over the initial enthusiasm of more grunt. But I'm all over the fuel consumption issue now, like a fat kid on a smartie. So sometime after Xmas I'll post some more info. I may even have dyno figures. Regards D.T. P.S. Have a merry Xmas and a happy new year all. __________________ LC Prado GXL-TD 95 Series. Any idea what the pipe change did for the fuel consumption, have you dynoed your rig yet?

Matti,
Mo haven't had a chance to get on the dyno. But fuel figures have not really changed much but have heaps more go now. D.T. __________________ LC Prado GXL-TD 95 Series. I had a more dramatic experience going to 3" on my 1HDT powered 80 series. I think Toyota probably optimized the exhaust on more recent vehicles like yours so the improvement is much smaller when upsizing exhaust.

What´s the diameter of turbo outlet, make it any difference to change the dump pipe? It´s quite short part of exhaust...

Matti,
It is crucial that the dump pipe is upgraded as well. The hot expanding gases from the turbo outlet are at their most potent at this point. So allowing the exhaust gases to expand and produce more work on the turbo vanes. The standard dump pipe is way too restrictive at this point. Regards D.T. I just read that again and it doesn't read right but you get the idea it should be replaced. __________________ LC Prado GXL-TD 95 Series. For what it's worth, my preliminary data on my 1HD-T with upgraded exhaust (with a huge power increase) is that fuel economy is not significantly better or worse, although as Wayne says, once you have the power, you use it, so that may have some impact. But overall it looks as if the fuel consumption is about the same. I do see a possibility that under ideal circumstances it could be quite a bit better (cruising at approx. 60-80 kph under partial boost on flat ground).

I ordered 3" dump pipe today. The rest of the exhaust I´ll make by myself of universal 3" parts.
Let´s see what it makes with wider tube. A little bit more noise at least. ![]() P.S. Deep Thought, where are your pictures gone? __________________ Land Cruiser KZJ90 -96 -2" bodylift + 1.25" spacers at front -33x12.50R17LT tires -Water Intercooler -3" exhaust pipe (incl. down pipe) Last edited by -MaTTi-; 02-12-08 at 03:26 PM. |
