Transfer case H -> HL shift
I got contradicting instructions: some places in the driver's manual say you have to stop the vehicle, other say you can shift while driving. What is the right thing to do? Note that I have an automatic transmission. Anyone? Thanks, Kobi __________________ 2003 Landcruiser 90 Prado 3.4L Auto Tranny LWB |

Hi Kobi,
I take it you are talking about shifting from High (centre diff unlocked - normal driving) to High locked (centre diff locked - more traction for sand, dirt, snow etc) I do shift on the fly (not stop) but I lower my speed a little I shift from H to HL and then just release the accelerator momentarily to allow the tcase to lock up. If that doesn't work, as it often doesn't due to the auto, I just shift the auto into N for a moment and the locked light comes on (remember to release the go pedel so revs don't flare up) then straight back into D and away I go. I've been doing it this way since day one (4 years ago now) and no probs so far Hope it helps

Got an idea what is the correct official Toyota way, or did you encounter same contradictions in the manuals?

Direct fromt he Toyota user manual I have. Note that mine is a Australian version 2002 GXL Diesel and auto. this info is on Page 140 of my manual so have a look around that spot in yours I guess.
Shifting proceedure (with auto trans) To shift from 'H' to 'HL' move the four wheel control lever This can be done at any vehicle speed. If the indicator light does not come on when you shift the transfer into 'HL', drive straight ahead while accelerating and decelerating. To shift from 'HL' to 'H' Shift the four wheel drive control lever This can be done at any vehicle speed. If the indicator light does not come on when you shift the transfer into 'H', drive straight ahead while accelerating and decelerating or drive in reverse. I haven't read the whole book so I'm not sure if it contradicts itself anywhere, but the above is what I go by. Hope that helps
