potential problems with 285s on 90 series...

I've heard that 285/75R16 tires tend to cause recurring steering rack problems on the 90 series. Has anyone ran 285s or bigger?

(Assuming that there's a lift installed and no rub would occur)

Any feedback from 96-02 4runner or Tacoma owners is welcomed, as we share virtually the same front end.

That's exactly what I've heard, at least for the 2 door 2.7l model. I think they look awesome with 265s anyway, why take a chance? I also think it would make them considerably slower and with the 2.7l it's not like you have hp to spare.

i have 295's on my 4runner. the 2 major issues are 1, the upper control arm and 2, the pinch weld. I have a 2.5" front lift and a 1" body lift. i am going to have to get a hammer and go after the pinch weld to stop the rubbing. I would assume that these 2 areas are the only things to look out for.

They do look great with the 265s, but to me tires are like money, you always want more

The power loss can be solved with by installing 4.88 gears

What issues have you experienced with the upper control arms?

in some cases the tires will rub the upper control arm at full locl, and worse at all times. I dont have any problems, but I have 4th gen wheels that are backspaced more and 1.5" wheel spacers.

I had 285 MTRs on cruiser offset rims, and had the inner rack ends replaced at 45000km under warranty by toyota.

Sold the car at 68000km .

I've heard that the inner racks failure is very commmon with tires over 265. What about the CVs?

no issue with cv's, but I have never broken a cv in any vehicle I have had either.

But I do use a $60 a tube grease when I pack them.

here is a pic of a LC90 with 3.4 V6 with 305/70R16 dick cepek f/c tires on american racing 16x8 rims. so far the owner did not have any problems with the set-up. suspension is OME shocks and springs with additional 10mm spacers in the front. sorry for the picture quality used a phone cam.

Nice setup. Looks great. When you mentioned spacers, do you mean wheel spacers or Coil spacers?

I think he meant coil spacers, I don't know about the problems of having 285x75R16 but I've seen and know people that run that tire size in many 90s here in Venezuela and I never heard of it.

Maybe i've heard about loosing power (hp's) like someone said before, but that's pretty commun with big tires on any rig you have unless you are supercharged, turbo, or have a lot of hp's to spare out.
