a 30-06, while nothing close to a safari or big bear gun, is too much to start with unless you can secure some really light loads for it. That is possible, though. If you are lucky enough to have a friend reloader, he could make some light recoil cast bullet rounds (if it's not a gas semi-auto gun). Play with those for a while and then slowly go for full loads. Or buy some commercial light loads, but these may not be cheap. If the light loads are not possible, don't start with an 06...
