I'm no expert, but I'll echo what the other guys said. A .22LR is a great gun to start out with for plinking and small varmints. Many a squirrel and rabbit can be taken with a .22. If not a .22, a 12 gauge shot gun is very versatile. I have a Mossberg 500 which can be purchased for under $200 and they are a decent reliable pump shotgun. Many law enforcement agencies use them, modified a bit with different stocks and such, of course.
