BFG Mud terrain

I decided to go with BFGs LT315 75R 16 instead of the MTRs and Toyos. I was leaning toward MTRs before but heard too many negatives. Can't find Toyos anywhere except Japan and Canada. Ordered 5 from 4wheel parts locally and they also have $75 instant saving good till May 31st.

i have them on my 80 and 40, and I am really happy with them on and off road....Good buy.......whimpy MTR's

I had 35" BFG MTs on my last 80. It was a 91 so it had the 15s. Other than a few sidewall failures in some really really sharp lava rocks that also ate several MTRs and handling like crap in the winter I thought they were a decent tire. Since you are in TX I doubt the winter ability really matters to you. Plus having them on a 16" rim I believe gives a slightly stronger sidewall. They wear very well. I have the Toyos on this 80 in a 315. I like them but I certainly wouldn't pay the outrageous prices for them that people are paying right now. And we will have to wait and see but I don't think they will wear as well as the BFGs. Enjoy the money you saved and the long wear.

How you doing. I'm new to the site so I've been lurking for awhile reading all the tire subjects I can while trying to figure out which tires I will buy. I ended up buying Pro Comps 285 75 16 MT. From what I understand these are the exact same tire as the BFG just with a different name. Any insight on this?

By the way Robert, I'm the guy up the street with the 40th anniversary cruiser in Redwood City. I wanted to find out about those springs you have.

Th Pro Comp is nothing like the BFG. It is made by Cooper. It has siping. The tread blocks are laid out differently and it has a 2 ply sidewall.

I'm pretty sure that the BFG are by far better tires in overall situations vs MTR .. never try Toyos .

I thought also maybe MTR are more silence than BFG .. not sure .. and for sure in off road BFG are by far better, in wet road ( puring rain ) both are great tires .. ( keep in mind are MT )

If my memory is correct, the BFG Mud Terrain is NOT available in a 305-70-16 size. Correct? I tried buying them in the past and was informed they were unavailable.

I have 5 mounted on my truck. BFG M/T km 305/70R16. Bought them from Sears a few years ago. Great price and their road hazard has paid off when I had the BFG A/T's and had to replace 3 under warranty. No issues with the M/T's so far (~20k miles)

In one side-by-side test, MTR's were "stickier" than my M/T's. 3 similarly equipped 80s (stock engine, 4.10s, 33" tyres, lockers) 2 running GY MTR's, mine with the M/T's. The others were able to climb a steep rock but I was denied. Could have been other factors but I'll attribute it to the tyres.

I assume all three were running stock wheels and the same pressure?

If I can ever wear my BFG AT/KOs out, those are two tires on my list.

1 had Toyota steelies (16x8) and 2 had OEM alloys. Mine has the alloys.

As for the tyre pressure... Obviously, I wasn't giving up after the first few failed attempts so I kept dropping tyre pressure from ~25 to ~15. I don't remember what pressure the other 2 trucks were running. I finally said "uncle" after about 6 tries. It was an optional obstacle and we were just playing on some big (house-size) rocks. Bugged me though...

I sold my BFG A/T ko tyres after running them about 3 years. They still had a lot of tread and they went on another 80 for about a year, and now he runs them on a T100. Probably 50k miles on that set of 5 tyres between the 3 vehicles (faulty logic though... 3 were warranty replacements...)

The tires I am now running are looking to take about 100k to get to 6/32...unless the wear rate is not linear.

I'll probably have to sell them with 50% tread left or the 80 will wear out before they do

Fortunately the wear rate is not linear but I know what you mean. Those BFG A/T's are some loooong wearing tyres!

There are not that many hardware to show on my LCs.

I'm just now starting to work on them.

Yes they are available. I just came from 4wheel parts this afternoon and saw them. There are Toyo tires there also for 17" rims if anybody is interested. These 35" BFGs looks great on the Cruiser.

I've been running a set of BFG MTs on my FJ60 the last 3 years and I don't care for them. The BFG MTs are downright dangerous on wet freeway, plus they are noisy and difficult to keep balanced. Mine have chunked considerably as well. I will not get another set.

My other two trucks run MT/Rs which handle better, stop better and are quieter on the freeway. The MT/Rs don't wear as well, however, which is one place where the BFGs really shine. I agree with Beowulf, that they do not "stick" as well to anything. Not rocks, not wet pavement, not dirt. My guess is that the BFG rubber compound is just harder. That's good for long life on the road, but not as good for traction.

Overall I feel the MT/Rs are a better tire. The Dunlap MTs are at least as good and cheaper. The Firestone Destination MTs have been getting good reviews as have the Toyos. My FJ60 will be getting new tires in the next year, so I'll be anxious to see the conclusions in this thread.
