Forum Members Lifts - For FAQ

We received a lot of requests for a lift FAQ. Landtank stated that this would be a difficult thing to do as a result of all the variables and multiple issues that go along with it. We requested help in generating this FAQ and received no responses. So, we will take Walking Eagles suggestion to just catalog what people did. So thanks to Walking Eagle for the suggested format. I have modified it slightly.

Keep the commentary limited

1. What lift Kit / components did you use? Include Spacers, if any.
2. Why did you select that particular lift?
3. What tire size are you running?
4. Rim specs - 16x8 w/ "x" backspacing
5. What caster correction, if any have you used?
6. Have you had any rubbing issues?
7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?
8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?
9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.
10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?
11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?

Include any links describing your lift or issues.

Include a photo showing the lift and an action shot

EditL I have since upgraded the below lift and here is a link describing:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=94950

1. What lift Kit / components did you use? Include Spacers.

I selected the 2.5” OME Medium Lift kit.
Kit Included and was installed at Slee offroad:
2 x OME 851 Front Coil Springs
2 x OME 860 Rear Coil Springs
2 x N73 Nitrocharger Shocks
2 x N74E Nitrocharger Shocks
1 x SD24 Steering Damper
1 x CA77B Caster Kit
1 x Caster Bushing Press Piece

I am also using the 1” Mr Gasket Spacers from www.summitracing.com Part number MRG-1285 up front. See spacer install thread http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/51526-spacer-install-ome-lift.html

2. Why did you select that particular lift?
Wanted to keep it family friendly and at the time did not have any armor. Christo advised me to go with the medium in place of the heavy.

Later found that there is no real spring load difference between the medium and heavy lift springs, so I did not change them after I installed the armor and winch, just added the above spacer:

http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/44674-dont-swap-med-heavy-oem-springs.html

3. What tire size are you running?
BFG AT KO 285/70/R16’s - Real happy with them (See Tire section in FAQ)

4. Rim specs - 16x8 w/ "x" backspacing
Stock Rims, no backspacing

5. What caster correction, if any have you used?
What came in the kit as installed by Slee

6. Have you had any rubbing issues?
No

7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?
Yes- Turned out both drive shafts needed new Ujoints and to be re-balanced. Change in pinion angle made problem more prominent.

Recommended reading from FAQ:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/80904-drive-shaft-pm-drive-train-troubleshooting-faq.html

8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?
This is my DD. I also wheel this at Moab and in Colorado. I tend to stay on trails rated a 7 or lower on a scale of 10.

9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.
Yes

10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?
Nothing

11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?
Considering going to 315 sized tires, but I would have to re-gear (IMO) first. So I would re-gear, go bigger tires and then consider at that time need for 4” lift.

1. What lift Kit / components did you use? Include Spacers, if any.

*I started with the usual bits for a medium OME lift.
*However I placed Slee 4" coils in the front.
*I used Slee front control arms.
*Adjustable front/rear panhards.

2. Why did you select that particular lift?

I drove to Slee offroad in Co, and we put this setup together to achieve my ends - driveability, offroad ability, and a taller, wider level stance.

3. What tire size are you running?

36x13.5R16 Super Swamper IROK radials

4. Rim specs - 16x8 w/ "x" backspacing

*Stock 16x8 wheels
*1.5" aluminum wheel spacers.

5. What caster correction, if any have you used?

I installed Slee front control arms.

6. Have you had any rubbing issues?

No rubbing issues with the cut front bumper ends and custom bump stop drops installed - 2" front, 3" rear.

7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?

No vibes at all.

8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?

Mainly on road/hwy. Daily driver.

9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.

Very pleased indeed.

10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?

This latest evolution described here solved many outstanding issues I had.

11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?

*I may buy 16x9 aftermarket wheels .. fatten out the stance a touch more.
*I would like to add the upcoming Slee front bumper and therefore a small front spacer to relevel the 80 subsequently.

A full writeup of this build can be seen in
this thread.

*Stay tuned for hardcore shots .. I'm usually too busy busting my junk to snap pics.

1. What lift Kit / components did you use? Include Spacers.

Slee 6" springs
1.5" aluminum spring spacers
14 inch 5150 Bilstiens
OME steering damper
Rear bump stops
no front sway bar.
Custom modded rear sway bar.
14 inch bilstiens 5700 (?) or are they 5500? the have a remote resivoir and does not use busing but a spherical end.

2. Why did you select that particular lift?
Looking to run a roughly 37 inch tire.. In running trails that get you high centered or caught on the sliders with 35's and J's going this route seemed logical

3. What tire size are you running?
37 inch SSR, Grooved and Hammered. Saving coin for something new. Wouldnt really recommend this tire now that there are so many other good choices out.

4. Rim specs

17 inch pro comp extreme alloy. 5 inch bs but i run 2 inch spacers. I am going to go to a 16 or 17 inch steel wheel 2 inch bs once i get new tires

5. What caster correction, if any have you used?

I have custom built front control arms. Looking back I wish i had just done a 3 link. These work better than stock but would have done it differently.

6. Have you had any rubbing issues?

None, I run no bump stops up front

7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?
I run a CV joint up front. rear is stock except i did new joints at same time of lift. I adjusted the rear arms back to stock angles

8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?
When i built this rig it was not my DD. I am now DDing this vehicle and my toy with some things like a front sway bar, Defenitly getting different tires as these are LOUD and UNBALANCED.

9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.

Sure. i have 4.88's, Thinking i will go supercharger in the next 16 months.

Ya so far. Its hard to find the happy medium where you still enjoy driving it on the road yet still have the results off road. I just drove it from utah to illinois and it was very drivable, a front sway bar would have done wonders though

10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?
I liked my j's and the progression but doing it once is always better. I have the "stiffer" rear six inch springs, go with the softees

11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?

37's seem like a great size. no bigger (anytime soon) wouldnt mind having an extra set of 35's to throw on if there is no wheeling coming up.

1. What lift Kit / components did you use? Include Spacers.

I selected a hybrid setup which netted me 4" of lift.

2 x SOF4FM Front Coil Springs (Slee Offroad)
2 x OME 860J Rear Coil Springs
2 x N73L Nitrocharger Shocks
2 x N74L Nitrocharger Shocks
1 x SD24 Steering Damper
2 x Slee Front Control Arms

Homemade:
bumpstop drops
brake line extensions
front swaybar removed
rear swaybar removed
Hitch Pin Mod

2. Why did you select that particular lift?
I wanted a lift that would have the abililty to clear true 35" tires and tackle moderate/mod-difficult trails and still ride nice.

3. What tire size are you running?
35 X 12.50 X 16 Interco Trxxus M/T

4. Rim specs - 16x8 w/ "x" backspacing
Stock Rims, no backspacing

5. What caster correction, if any have you used?
Currently I am running the Slee Offroad control Arms

6. Have you had any rubbing issues?
Minor rubbing on rear mudflap, very minor trimming needed. Mudflap is now gone so only rubbing occurs under full stuff due to not having adjustable trackbars on the rig yet.

7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?
As of now, the only driveline issues are some vibrations most likely caused by the fact the original u-joints are on the rig. New ones are on order from the parts shaman and should be on shortly.

8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?
Daily Driver, camper, wheeler

9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.
So far the on road driving is very good, haven't gotten a chance to "thouroughly" check it's off-road performance. Went on one trip and it performed VERY well. Extremely stable and the front flex is almost matching the rear. The vehicle stayed very level and worked very well.

10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?
I would go with Slee 4" coils in the rear, I removed my 3rd row seats, but with my rear tire carrier, and gear it definitely feels softer than the front.

11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?
I'm planning on putting the pan-hard adjusters in and changing to 4.88 gearing.

Here is a thread about the differences I made to help get more flex:

1. What lift Kit / components did you use? Include Spacers, if any.
OME "J" springs front and rear w/ OME "L" shocks and MAF extended brake lines. I also extended my breathers and removed my rear sway-bar.

2. Why did you select that particular lift?
I knew that OME had a good reputation and I wanted a lift of 4".

3. What tire size are you running?
Currently running 33x12.50R16 Super Swamper Trxus

4. Rim specs - 16x8 w/ "x" backspacing
16x10 black Rock Crawler steelies w/ 4.5" backspacing

5. What caster correction, if any have you used?
None... I didn't really notice that much of a change in drivability.

6. Have you had any rubbing issues?
Not at all.

7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?
There is a little bit of vibration at certain speeds, but not enough to worry about.

8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?
It used to be my daily driver, but now it just drives to the trails.

9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.
I think it is a perfect starting place.

10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?
Nothing, just add to it.

11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?
I am planning to put a 1.5" spacer in the front, trim the fenders MetalTech style and run 37's on the same wheels.

1. What lift Kit / components did you use?
OME J, L shocks, 1.5 custom steel spacers on the front to level the truck
2. Why did you select that particular lift?
Availability, no need for changes to other components (control arms, driveline)
3. What tire size are you running?
285
4. Rim specs - 16x8 w/ "x" backspacing
OEM
5. What caster correction, if any have you used?
OME, but will likely move to caster plates as steering wanders
6. Have you had any rubbing issues?
No
7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?
Slight vibration on deceleration from highway speed. It's likely in the drveshafts, will look at replacing u-joints and then double cardan shaft.
8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?
Daily driver, light trails.
9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.
Yes.
10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?
Try the unheard of OME Competition 5" springs alone in the front instead of springs and spacers.
11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?
Either taller springs in the front or 2" spacers to accommodate heavier load on the front springs.

1. What lift Kit / components did you use? Include Spacers, if any.
OME 3" kit with drop brackets. Essentially the J springs and L shocks all around, no front saway bar, home made rear adjustable panhard rod and extended breathers for the axles and Slee extended brake lines.
2. Why did you select that particular lift?
To get just enough lift to fit larger tires and get the maximum performance offroad.
3. What tire size are you running?
285 75 R16 PJ Dirt Grips.
4. Rim specs - 16x8 w/ "x" backspacing
16X8 Stock OEMs.
5. What caster correction, if any have you used?
MAF 3 " Drop brackets.
6. Have you had any rubbing issues?
Absolutely not.
7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?
Yes, I did not install the CC bushings I received with the kit. So obviously the truck would want to wander off. I thought I could get away without them since I heard number of people didn't need any castor correction with Js and Ls. Then after I had installed the MAF 3" drop brackets, things got much better but then I had vibrations due to unbalanced tires. So after I balanced the tires, things got better; however, my front drive shaft grinds at 70+ mph. I have been neglecting it for a while now. I need to grease the drive shaft or simply upgrade it to a DC shaft.
8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?
It's a daily driver and a moderate to heavy wheeler.
9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.
Yes.
10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?
Nothing.
11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?
Yes, I am planning on getting 35s or 36s for trail use only. I don't have any extra weight on either front and/or rear so I get about 4" lift. I am hoping to fit either of these sizes of tires without any significant rubbing. Additionally I would like to get 2" bump stops all around.

Include any links describing your lift or issues.
The only major issue I had was the compatibility between the Slee slider and MAF drop bracket. I had to grind off about 1" from the bottom of the DS front slider leg (plate that attaches to the frame) to be able to fit it. Additionally, I had to grind the drop bracket hole to make it wider so it would align with cross member holes. Finally I had to get an adjustable rear pnahard rod because the rear axle was shifted towards the DS. I decided to make it myself. The following links have more info and pictures:

1. What lift Kit / components did you use? Include Spacers, if any.

OME 850 Front / OME 860 Rear / Later Added 30 MM Spacers to Front
Bilstein Shocks

2. Why did you select that particular lift?

Knew that I was going to run an ARB front bumper with winch so I went heavy up front. No mods to rear bumper and I don't carry any kind of load when wheeling or travelling to speak of so I stuck with mediums in rear. I later added 30MM poly spacers up front to level the truck.

Also - I've lifted alot of trucks through the years and have had problems with lifts over 2.5 inches such as, driveline vibration, alignment, handling etc.. Unless it's a dedicated trail rig I would not do more than the 2.5 inch lift.

3. What tire size are you running?

285 / 75 / 16 - With stock gearing and available engine power this is as much tire as I feel the vehicle is capable of turning efficiently. They also work well with the 2.5 inch lift - no rubbing, etc..

4. Rim specs - 16x8 w/ "x" backspacing

Stock 1997 wheels.

5. What caster correction, if any have you used?

Can't remember exact degree, but installed as per OME instructions.

Note:First two OME kits failed - poly seperated from metal. New style seems to be good to go.

6. Have you had any rubbing issues?

No - 285 tires.

7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?

No. Maintain the 2.5 inch lift max.

8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?

Transportation, moderate wheeling, fishing, camping, etc..

9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.

Yes - my third 80, I had two 60's and two 40's going back to 1979.

10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?

Nothing.

11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?

None, unless I decide to retire truck from DD use which I am contemplating. Then I will add more aggresive tires. Probably TRXS MT's, Aussie locker and sliders.

1. What lift Kit / components did you use? Include Spacers, if any.
OME 418/421 springs (OZ spec competition springs)
OME N73L/N74L shocks
Superior Engineering 30mm spacers in the rear
Tough Dog adjustable panhard rods
2. Why did you select that particular lift?
Fitted ARB rear bar that caused the rear to sag from my old 2" lift to below stock height. Decided that if I was going to put heavier springs in I might as well go 4".
3. What tire size are you running?
285/75R16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R
4. Rim specs - 16x8 OEM steel wheels powdercoated black
5. What caster correction, if any have you used?
Have EFS 3* CC bushes
6. Have you had any rubbing issues?
Only on the 3" exhaust tailpipe under full compression of the RHR wheel
7. Did you have any Driveline issues? What was the cause and how did you fix it?
Not as yet.
8. What is your main on and off-road uses of vehicle?
Daily driver- to and from work each workday (75km round trip)
Weekend warrior- medium to hard 4wdriving most weekends
Long distance expedition vehicle- Annual 4 weeks leave, big trips
9. Are you happy with the performance on and off-road your for your use.
As my truck is on the heavy side I think the L shocks are struggling to control the weight. Before the weight increase the old OME shocks were fine but now I feel I need stiffer valving on my new shocks in certain conditions.
10. What would you do if you were going to do it differently?
After being led astray by non-mudders and fitting 3* CC bushes I would fit 5.5* CC plates or drop arms first up if I was doing it again. Maybe fit Tough Dog or Dobinsins shocks instead of the OMEs for the reasons listed above.
11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?
Drop arms and stiffer shocks as above. I also have a set of Simex Centipede Extreme Trekkers 35/10.5R16s on 16x8s for play use. I haven't tried them with this lift yet to see if they rub but they didn't with the 2" lift so don't see any dramas. Haven't modified my bumpstops yet (I know, it's on my to do list).

Edit; BTW I don't run swaybars at either end and I've strengthened the rear control arms with 30x30x3 steel angle iron stitch welded to the underside of the lower arms.

My cruiser is fitted with a 350 V8 and just recently added a MCC bull bar. Even before adding the bar the 80 appeared to be drooping a bit in the front. Is there anywhere i can get the factory specs on actual clearence, and where is this measured. Is it from the centre of the axle to the bottom of wheel well or between axle and bumpstop

Standard height is 20" from axle centre line to bottom of flare, IIRC.

11. Any plans on modifying the lift or other related components (Tire size)?

thinking about those extra MT tires and rims, 33 or 35

Include any links describing your lift or issues.

here is video of the truck with the extra armour but before the Js. play the first part with the sound up to learn why I went to Js!

Include a photo showing the lift and an action shot
no actiosn shots yet, but here is the lift and an idea of what 24 inches of rear bumper clearance looks like
