alternator brushes before and after

I thought folks might want to see why the alt brush replacement is a good idea. Here are my before and after shots. The brushes are spring loaded against a rotating shaft so they wear away over time. At 152k there was not a lot of wear left before it would start to lose contact. This is a cheap and easy way to renew your alternator.

Pretty quick and easy, eh? Great $15 investment and with the alternator out it's about 5 minutes. I agree this is one of the "no-brainers" of 80 ownership.

Do you have to remove the alt to do this job, I can't seem to find a definitive answer? I've got a set of brushes sitting here, but haven't gotten around to putting them in yet.

Yes, alternator must be removed as the brushes are located inside the alternator. Any decent alternator/starter rebuilding company can supply a brush pack. Might consider replacing the bearings while there. Brushes and bearings are the primary wear components and if you're going to replace one, you might as well replace the other.

My local Toyota and Lexus dealers have the front bearing but they say they can't find a part # for the rear alternator bearing. Anyone else have trouble finding the correct rear bearing?
