winch question

i am ready to buy a winch. Is the 9000 enough to get me out of most rough situations or do i need the 12000. If you have any stories or anything about how damn sweet one winch is more than the other please tell me. thanks

IMO the 12000 would be the way to go. Actually if you want to know....Im putting the 16,500 on mine. The question isnt what do I need. The question is.....for a hundred bucks is it really worth it to be out in the field saying "I wish Id gotten the......."

Realistically, youd be fine with the 9. However, if your like me.........

JAX;

In most minor situations a 9k winch will do.
For serious, really stuck situations the 12k Warn is a great help; especially when trying to pull another truck out of mud.

I would opt for the biggest u can put on the 80 vs the wallet.

There's your answer above.

I wish someone would make a "sticky" of this question. It seems to get asked about once a week.

Whatever you decide upon, be careful with it!

Do you want to be pull out of most situations, as you say, or all of them? Honestly, I'd buck up to the 12K.

Cheers

If weight is a concern remember that an 8k with a snatch is worth 16k on the pull.

I have the 9000# Superwinch mounted in my ARB. 12000# stall rating I think? The way it's made you can't even see it. It took a slight cut on the alumunim winch housing to fit with a sawzall, but I like the fact that it's hidden.

I opted for the 9K. I always carry 2 snatch blocks, some chain and a tree saver. Sure, snatching slows the line speed but when winching speed is not my first concern...safety first. If I had the extra dough I would have got the 12K but I don't and I figured snatching the 9K would serve my purpose well.

I finally got my first winch after many years of exploring the back country. I opted for the warn 9.5XP(with 6 hp motor). I rarely have ever truly needed a winch, have opted to either use the shovel or the high lift jack. While I believe the 12k one is a little over kill, it is a direct bolt in on the ARB front bumper, Any other warn winch smaller than this in the currenly line up will not be direct bolt in. You will have to use a spacer on the feet to get the motor away from the front plate(or cut a hole in the bumper). As far as I know the ARB for the 80 was devoloped with the 10k in mind, so either the 12 or 16k will be a direct bolt in. I like my 9.5 alot, but really have not put it under hard use yet, only light use. I also did not want the weight of the bigger units on the front of my truck. later robbie

I took the price sheet from the winch depot into 4wheel parts and they matched it.

Do you think the ARB can handle that much pulling force, especially if you used a snatch block? I thought it was designed for a 12,000 winch max.

Never buy short on recovery gear...ever. There is no such thing as too much pulling power, too strong a cable or strap or what have you. It's recovery gear. It cannot fail.

Don't ever count on being able to "throw a snatch block on it to double your power". That is a luxury and there are situations where you simply can't do that.

Make it a habit of inspecting ALL your gear before each trip.
