TiredIron's TLC build up

I picked up this 91' last Saturday and started doing a few mods to it yesterday...here's a link to a "Mods" page for the TLC.
Pirate Build Thread

I have a set of Volvo portal axles coming to go under it, I will post when I update the mods page.

Man - cool idea on the storage box!

Your rig reminds me of my old 91.

Tired Iron,

I know the guy you bought your cruiser from. He used to be my neighbor but moved away...Todd, right?

He's a really cool guy, actually bought my old 72 a long time ago.

I too, would love to see the portals under that thing.
Very nice.

I got my ARB winch bumper today but there wasn'r any installation instructions with it, does anyone one have them. I have the bumper installed but there's several small brackets that I have no idea what they are for.

Congrats on the purchase and cool mods so far! I'm pretty sure I still have the instructions on my recent ARB bar install. You should have the license plate mount and the winch box mount? And the two tabs that go between the stock tow hooks and bumper. I think that was it...

I am interested in a mile marker also (good prices).

All you did was mount it upside down... Did you have to drill any new holes? Is there possibly any harm from mounting the winch the way you did?

I had to drill two holes in the fairlead, and one in the bottom of the controller box. It shouldn't hurt anything.

Got the front axle in with the steering all hooked up and all the brackets on the rear one, now to get my yokes mated up and brake lines made up. Off to the machine shop in the morning for flange adapters.

What size meats are those? Looks great, volvo portals are super cool. Just throw a toyota turbo diesel in that thing, and it's my dream rig...

I heart the black rims, too.

The link at the top of the thread has some, I'll go through my other pics and see if there's any more good ones.

TiredIron, that is pretty sweet. I really want to do portals as well but have some reservations.

Do you think the Volvo units are going to hold up? Or are you not planning hardcore rock crawling. I want to run 44's and not sure if they will last.

Also, are you coverting the brakes or sticking to drums?

And on the front, do you think the stock 2 link system will be enough to locate the axle? With the extra leverage of the portal units, are you worried about axle wrap?

I wouldn't go any larger than 38s with the stock Volvos, but they are very strong axles, I ran 38s on the Volvo 6X6 I had and it did great even on extremely rocky offcamber trails.

No, I'm keeping the drums. The ones on the 6X6 actually stopped better than the ones on the FJ ('91 model). I am putting all new shoes, wheel cyls, and springs on them.

I sure hope so!...I think it will do fine, remember I'm only running the 3FE and I usually just crawl over obstacles and don't hammer on them. If I don't make it on the second attempt I just bypass it, I'm old enought to not worry about ego or peer pressure on the trail I proved my ignorance years ago and have the aches and scars to prove it.

You are get my vote for sickest buildup in a longtime.
This thread is pure pleasure to read.
What kind if army surplus did you did that 6x6 out of?

Thanks, the 6X6 came from Sweden. It's a Swedish Military TGB13 or better know as a C304. The 4X4 version is the C303.

pain

How can that look so good and fairly simple at the same time(except for the 427 little things you had to solve), wow I want that set up bad. How little lift can you get away with those 38s
I have jealousy cramps right now.

The suspension is completely stock, the portals give you 5" of lift. I do plan on a new set of shocks and possibly a set of 2" OME springs, depends on clearance which right now looks pretty good.

That is something. 5" of lift just by putting the axles in, hmmm gets me thinking, put a 6" Slee on top of that with some spacing maybe, and you're looking at a solid 11-12.5" lift (adding is so much fun). That would be insanity. Nice rig like what you have done to it, and the 6x6 must kick ass.

Here's some pics from today, I only got to work on it a few hours.

These are the flange adapters that I had made at Universal Machine & Tool Co. in Kingsport. They do awesome work but they also charge for it

This shot was taken with the full weight on the axle, the lift in only holding up the rear of the truck.
