Same concept as a hand crank winch, the lower the gearing the less force it takes to turn it.

gear reduction at the wheels. So there is less stress as opposed to the axles being twisted from the diff straight to the wheels in a conventional set-up.

Right I gotcha.... is there a good place to look for these axles for sale... some kinda surplus military stores (even though it's swedish). I was always sad I never had the money when you were selling your other sets. I think these are the way i'm going to go. More for my mini truck though. As im sure you know it seems that the only limitation for a fj80 with those volvo's is the body and I don't want to trash mine too much it is my daily driver.

Do a search for Volvo C303 parts (or Volvo TGB parts). You will likely find them overseas and have to import.

2 places you CAN try:
xtremevehicles.com
coldwarremarketing.com

If they don't have them, I'm sure they can get them.

Tirediron had a set for sell, also there was some talk of Metal Tech going to sell parts as well as the Volvo axles.

Hi!
I'm very interested in the way you upgraded you vehicle, as I would like to fit Volvo axles on my Range Rover.
As I've heared many things about these axles, I would like to have your opinion / feedback on these axles and thei strength and reliability.
I've been told that Volvo axles (and even Unimog axles) have not been designed for serious off roading and don't like side angles. When used under these conditions, they prematurely fail.
How long have you been using these axles? Which tires did you fit? Are you going for serious off-roading?
Best Regards
Christophe

Yes these axle are very very weak. They would never hold up to serious off road use. They will fail for sure with big tires slapped on. I would never put them under my truck. The stock ones are way stronger.

true, true, but i'll bet the hold up longer than the Range Rover. So it shouldn't be an issue.

Just do some research. The volvos hold up fine, more or less. They're on par with the cruiser axles or mini-truck axles. There are some aftermarket options for them as well (birf eliminators, chromoly or 300M shafts, disc brake conversions). I am thinking of going with stumper axles, though. Based on volvo portals but with a few design tweaks with offroading in mind. I will have to sell a kidney and my first born to afford them, but they look to be the ultimate ticket for portals nowadays.

TiredIron, i just read this whole post and loved what you did with the 80, awesome job! Sorry to dig this thread back up, but does anyone know if your 80 is still getting around and does the new owner visit IH8mud at all? I really just wanna see more pics of it being wheeled!
Hope you have fun with your new buggy!

What a waste. It's just so sad he sold it for a common buggy.

no disrespect to what he did, but i'm really surprised that no one else has done this. It's really not that big of a deal. Just sourcing good axles is tuff. The rest is just basic fab skills.

If i had the cash, i want to do the same thing.

The new owner is too busy to do much web wheeling, as for the buggy it's tons of fun and for expedition type wheeling I bought a new 4 door Jeep JK. I'm thinking my next LC project will be a Troopy.
