I thought a mechanical brake on the transfer output would be ideal but, It appears that the fuel tank on the drivers side is very close to the transfer case output. I don't know if I could squeeze the parking brake there or not. Anyone else put such a parking brake on an 80 series??? My other thought was a disc brake conversion that uses a rear caliper that has a mechanical parking brake built into it. Something off a late 80's Caddy is what I used on my 62 series. I know Xtremevehicles. com is supposed to sell the disc brake conversion for the Volvo axles and I'm sure that I could fabricate a mounting plate/bracket for the Caddy calipers. I would like to just run a LineLock but, these are not legal here in MA for road vehicles. I need a mechanical parking brake and this seems to be my biggest hurdle right now. Does anyone know of anyone who has put disc brakes on the rear axle of a Volvo and could offer up some pics?

Everytime this thread gets bumped to the top I have to look in awe. Damn I wish I knew how to weld well enough to do this. I found a set of these axles locally for $900 (been out in the weather for a while, so I'm not to sure they would even work) damn the temptation!

I have to say, so much for having a desire to run 60's, 70's or even stick with Toyota axles.

After seeing portals, I want them under my 80 and 40.

Perhaps we could organize a group buy for those magnets and whoever wants to participate could advertise for your club?

Unless, they are exclusive to your club, that is...

Any sign company can make them, we designed them after the 1st Armored Division's emblem. I think it would be good to have a magnetic IH8MUD sign with our profile name on them.

Yea...I kinda like the whole "Tired Iron" thing...sorta fits with some of these landcruisers...However, I would not plagiarize, it would have to come from the source.

The "Tired-Iron" comes from restoring the old militarry vehicles, most of them are tired iron when we get them.

Hey Tired, for your next set of tires, you should see if any Michelins come in the sizes you need. Might have to go to 20 inch rim, Military tires like XZL's, biggest in a 16 inch is 9.00 16... which I think is 255/100/r16 36.5 inches dia

Very hard compounds, not rock crawlin tires, but tough and will not wear out like those swampers.

I ran a set (1100X16) on the 6X6 Volvo I had and they sucked, the Boggers do great on all types of terrain (Except pavement).

I got rid of the huge rockgrabber muffler today.

Replaced it with a Flowmaster 40 knockoff.

Very sorry to highjack this great buildup- but for anyone serious about this portal conversion, I have a damaged front axle housing off a '96 in the for sale section. Would make a great donor for the brackets required to do the conversion and still keep your front axle complete for resale value or to ever reverse the mod.
(hijack off)

TiredIron - I like how you have built it up. Everything is purposeful and practical, yet different.
