I was told later in the day that the steering was trashed, and both front and rear diffs were blown. I didn't look at it very close, I know that after we pulled him off that ledge it wouldn't move under it's own power.

I helped him diagnose the issues he had.
1. Broken tie rods up front.
2. Broken carrier in the rear (ring and pinion still turned)
3. Possible blown front diff (never tested)
All CVs appeared to be intact.
The story behind this was that he was on a ledge and tried to bump over when his tie rods failed. Then I guess the strain trashed the rear carrier.
The owner has it at a dealership in Birmingham and is heading back to Florida.
The interesting part was the owner told me his steering wheel was off after a trip he took prior. Seems to indicate that the damage to at least the tie rods was all there before and just not fully broken.
The hill he was on was not a difficult trail and a stock FJ had gone up it. The owner had a very nice rig, I hope it all works out for the best.

Here are some pics from today. They are kind of crappy since they are cell phone pics but here they are. This is above Donner Lake.

Love that pic.

Here are probably the same pics you posted in the CottonLand forum... Especially 80's doing some sweet things... mine is the 2-toned 80

80's are really starting to represent as crawler rigs in the South. The Southern Cruiser Crawl had a handful of 80's doing big things....

Came a hair from rolling it yesterday, if there hadn't have been two guys there to catch it. It was going over really slow, looks like 40 degrees is the slow tipover limit.

lol
There were a bunch of trucks rolling through there, I just found a deep pocket.
It happens. Everything is cleaned up, no contamination in the gear oil, etc.
Wheel bearings are even clean
I cleaned out my calipers, replaced my front pads while I was in there, and went on my way!
Oh, and to answer the question of "why"....my 3 and 5 year old told me to do it...that is my story and I am sticking to it.
