So Nicolas (Trans World Expedition recently had a mishap and snapped his sector shaft.

Yeah, bad.

I've been e-mailing him back and forth to try and get some more info from him. He's having trouble getting the right parts. According to the local mechanic, it's an aftermarket part (though I'm not sure I'd trust them since they evidentially don't know a lot about 80's).

Anyway, my thought is that earlier or later models might be around. Anyone have any ideas about bolting up a 60 or 100 series gear box on an 80? Or maybe just the sector shaft and pitman arm from the 100 series?

Not going to happen. 60/62 series sector shafts/pitman arms are different and 100 series are obviously different.

Best thing is for him to try to find a sector shaft/pitman arm from a used 80 series...barring that, order a new sector shaft/pitman arm.

Or you could send him the one off of your truck...gotta be better than an sheared sector shaft.

Already considered it. Problem is getting it to him. The mail service isn't exactly reliable down there.

Drat, was hoping that there would be a way to get it on there, even if it meant an entire new gearbox.

Hmm....I still haven't received that sector shaft and pitman arm yet. UPS must be running slow....

His story line indicates he's got the steering fixed...

"Two hours later, they came back with the US$450 part. It was expensive, but we had no choice."

I'm not 100% sure. From what I'm hearing it sounds like they may have gotten the wrong parts.

He's also waiting on a transmission part?

I'm thinking that they might be being given the run around.

I said it before, I'll say it again: this dude and his woman friend were not ready for this trip and I fear for the remainder of their trip. He has little to no mechanical knowledge of the 80 which is a significant issue in my book.

That's just me though and I am a glass-half-empty kind of guy. :meh:

I'm with Beno on this one; the story line said something about the distorted steering elements touching the transmission? like the drag link banging on the pan? seems ill-prepared at best, and maybe ignorantly optimistic at worst but, hey I am jealous of his temerity and wish I was bouncing around the world in my 'Cruiser...

Dunno; my hat's off to this guy, he must have a big trailer as well,

for his Cajone's to ride in...:flipoff2:
