Hey Everybody, a few questions
Hi everyone
I'm hopefully picking up a 95 FJ80 with 130,000 miles today with my Mom. I'm really excited because I've always thought that Land Cruisers were the most badass, indestructible trucks on the road and I really look forward to eventually maybe doing some performance mods to it and making it even more of a beast.
I'm not a serious off roader, but my friend knows a dude who literally owns a mountain, with trails and stuff, so I look forward to taking her on some trail rides in the summer hopefully.
My Mom was also looking at a 91 FJ80 because it's a bit cheaper and only has about 140,000 miles. It's in pretty good shape, save for the dryrotted tires and cracked sunroof, but it also doesn't have leather , which I love.
I know that the 91s didn't have the 4.5L engine. Aside from that and the airbags, are there any differences that would make having either the 95 or the 91 better than the other? I'm just curious because I don't know much about them other than that the engines are different, and the 91 is cheaper and closer lol.
Regardless of which one we get, I look forward to using this forum a lot for technical stuff and just to read up on things to do to the truck at some point maybe.
Thanks!!

Check the faq (Sticky thread toward top of 80 series forum), and the "80 series newbie" guide in the tech zone at Sleeoffroad.com.
93+ has ABS, rear disc brakes, more powerful engine, tinted windows, optional differential lockers, full floater rear axle,(there are a few 93-94 that don't have the full floater, rear disc, ABS), 95+ gets you OBDII, dual airbags, side door beam crash protection. There should be further info in the sources mentioned above.

tell your mom the 95 has more safety features, which it does. You'll most likely end up with that one then.

haha yeah I'm leaning more towards that one. Aside from the leather and the safety features, I like the wheels better, and all it needs is like a center cap on one of the wheels lol, the 91 has a cracked sunroof and dryrotted tires. So I'm thinking we'll end up with the 95

Welcome You can't go wrong with an LC, but your mom will appreciate the 95+ having more safety features.

Well after ruling out the 91 pretty much because of the safety features alone (my sister will be driving it and she's just getting her license now), we went and looked at the 95. It's in pretty great shape for it's age with only 140,000 miles I think.
It needed a few things, like tires (the ones on it were kind dryrotted, kinda want to get them replaced before a 2 1/2 hour drive on all highways lol), and the hood wouldn't close right. It would shut fine, but the latch wouldn't catch it so you could just lift it up and open it again after slamming it closed.
No rust anywhere on the body, some surface rust on the undercarriage which I'm sure is common and expected on a Northeast vehicle.
And no diff. locks
My Mom put it on hold, but we're not totally done looking. I'm still keeping my eye out for a 95-97, preferably with diff. locks, for 6 grand or less with not incredibly high miles. If anyone has one they're getting rid of, let me know lol

Mine was doing that also. I found that there is a spring in the latch area (where the hood clips into the front crossmember). If it does that, just reopen the hood and push the spring down on the right side and re-close it. It should latch then.
Good luck with the search.

I didn't know that. I was trying to mess with it at the place but couldn't get it. I'll try that the next time I see it, doesn't seem like a big deal if I can get it to work. Thanks!

Well guys we finally found one!!!
1997 Toyota Land Cruiser 40th Anniv Collectors Edition
a 97 40th Anniversary Edition 80. Great condition with a deer guard, upgraded stereo, bluetooth, navigation, lots of goodies. Not sure if it's got the diff. locks though, can't really tell by the pictures.
Still a good find though I think.
I'll be sure to post some pics after we pick it up tomorrow.
As far as the diff. lock goes, how much of a difference is there with the diff. lock and without the diff. lock in rough conditions such as snow or off roading? Is not having it going to affect the abilities of it a lot? I don't really plan on doing any serious off roading, I was just wondering.
Thanks!

Last picture that shows the interior is where you would see the diff lock switch. Not one there . If you're a serious offroader, you will miss the diff locks. If you just go offroad occasionally you should be fine without them. I think a good rule of thumb is, if you are crazy enough off road that you think it's necessary to remove the running boards, you would probably miss the diff locks. If not, you won't.

Yeah that stinks that it doesn't have them :( but I don't plan on doing hardcore stuff, just going on trails and stuff, maybe up mountains or whatever. So it should be fine in stock form I'm hoping even though some mods at some point would be cool

x2... Not a 40th Anniversary. It is probably a "Collectors Ed.", which was just a sticker. The 40ths didn't come in white and had 2 toned leather. And this badge:
Except they are usually not as dented as mine...

Yup it's a Collector's Edition not a 40th. Was the Collector's Edition anything special?
But we still got it, and it still kicks ***!!!!! I love it. It drives incredibly and looks bad*** going down the road. I'll post some pics tomorrow
