Exciting!! Sunroof Cable Part# Cost?
Good evening my muddy friends,
First off, I'M NOT TRYING TO
Attempting to get my roof to work properly, get rid of all my leaks, etc. I've got the headliner dropped and the sunroof all disassembled. My 2 CABLES(s) look like . They have what appears to be rusty-looking "felt" ? that run their entire length and they appear to be shot. I've just spent the last 45 minutes searching every post I could find that has anything to do with moonroofs/sunroofs (AND THERE IS A CABILLION OF THEM) to no avail.
Anyone have any details on what these "cables" originally looked like, what the felt junk is, where I can find them (prob C-Dan, right?) and how much I'm looking at $$$ to replace them?
Now wasn't that exciting!!
Sweet dreams,
Justin

As far as I know, these are not being made any more.

Miked,
So you think I may be looking at rehabing my old ones? I've never seen a cable with this felt business on them. Strange. The condition the cable are in now (with the "felt" in the valleys), I don't see how the gear from the motor could even get a bite to do it's job.
Massive internet search for replacement cables yielded no treasure.
Thanks for the reply,
Justin

I still need to do mine, so I'm not much of an expert. I can't imagine what the "felt" stuff is other some sort of debris. I would say if the cables are not broken, they're prolly still good, clean it out, regrease it and see if it works. Good luck.

You replace the rails, which have the "cables" built in. I was able to purchase some a few months ago no problem.
For my 97, I believe these were the parts:
63603-60014 Rail sub List price: $363.48
63604-60014 Rail Sub List price: $363.48
I think the "rail sub" portion is an incomplete description on my receipt. Verify that these are the parts before you order em. I paid about $90 less from a local friend that is a parts guy. Not sure what Dan's price is.
See this thread http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...of-repair.html for more details on the replacement, if you haven't found it already.
P.S. I only replaced the rails because one of the cables had broken it's molded plastic attachment to that rail. If nothing is actually broken, then you may want to try to clean and re-lube everything.

The felt stuff is built into the braided metal cables. I assume to reduce the friction of and prevent damage to the cable as it slides through the metal tube.

Good to know. I need to dive into mine, a few mental notes ahead of time always helps.

Mine broke because it got very dirty while open. I just couldn't resist that mudhole and I had forgotten the opened the roof. It died about 2 months later and I found quite a bit of mud like dirt inside.
That's a long way of saying try to keep it clean.

Good call...I'll close mine when driving through mud pits! But I understand the enthusiasm, I'd do the same I'm sure.
