So it sounds like this is designed to be installed in the freeze plug just forward (towards the grill) of the oil filter?

When I looked the block over, this seemed the most logical spot to put it, but why then are so many people installing them on the exhasut side?

I kinda' wondered the same.

How easy is it to remove a freeze plug, and specifically that one? What tool or method can I use?

great question ...and I got tired of debating that with lots of folks on the board...so there are the scanned instructions ... folks can follow em...or ignore them ...in addition can't imagine the heat on the exhaust side does the rubber covered cord much good either.

Two ways for removing a frost plug (there are others including a special tool) ..1) carefully drive a drift pin on one side of the frost plug which "can" spin it and then use a vise grip to remove or 2) drill a hole and thread a screw and use a slide hammer. Not much room. Be careful with the drift pin as I do not know how thick the webbing is there and you should avoid striking the block
(obviously drain first - BTW at least one person had evidence of a crack at the perimeter of that frost plug)

Correct on the spot where it "should" go!! A buddy and I did this a couple of years back and it was a major pain in the @ss!! It is a tight area with little room for tools!!

We tried to drill, but it didn't work... ended up punching it at the bottom with a super long drill bit and causing it to spin. It pushed the bottom in and the top moved out... then pulled like a son of a gun and finally got the frost plug out!! it took us a few hours to get 2 trucks done. Love it now though!!

Good Luck!

Would pulling the alternator free up enough room to work easier? Or would the PS reservoir still be in the way you think?

Ah screw it .. I bought a block heater from the stealership here in town, but I think I am gonna just go Rotella syn and a battery blanket and call it a day. Too much work to put that little sucker in for what it's worth in the end.
