Need new rubber what should I get
Good evening folks would love some advice in new treads. Been all over the forums for tires and lifts and Im very much clueless to say the least.
I have a 1996 fzj80 with stock everything. Its a dd for me but I dont drive a ton accept a short jaunt to work and hauling the kids to school etc. I also drive on the beach to surf and fish but dont do any heavy mudding or rock crawling.
- Can I get a bigger tire without getting a lift?
- If so how big can I go? Tire size
- I would like to get a tire thats a little beefier (is that even a word)? But not one that punches me in the face everytime I drop my kid of at school.
- If I did choose to get a small lift whats a ballpark number for that? I know that is hard to do because there is so much out there to chose from. Any advice would be great
I see alot of guys would lift the rig but keep the same tire size. Again I really could use your help. So with that said my main reason for the thread is to make my rig a little buffer.
Miss it Noonan MIss It Miss it MIss it ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

On my first LC (a 91), I put the 1 inch manfre spacers on each corner to lift to a visually appealing height. Spacers cost about $65 bucks (?) for all. Labor is simple and should be inexpensive if you choose to have someone do it for you.
I then installed 33 inch tall rubber in the wider 315/70r16 size. The 285/75r16 size is the same height but a little narrower. I chose the Goodyear Silent Armour which impressed me as one of the quietest, smoothest tires. The traction was great in rocks, sand, dirt. Very tough sidewalls. I would recommend as a great all around tire.
Top if off with an alignment and your looking good. My .02 worth...good luck and have fun with your new rig.

I like your approach murf, I would suggest wider tires if you are in the sand a fair bit (315's) although some people do find this a bit of a compromise on pavement.
Spacers are a cheap approach, but 2.5" (ish) lift coils through TRD (in the vendor section) arent too pricey, although you would eventually need shocks and maybe CC bushings. If you havent been aquainted with the FAQ section i would suggest it as their is alot of good info, although alot of reading in there.
BTW, Important question, do you drive on ice/snow at all? not familiar with the climate there...

295/75r16 is the largest I'll run without a lift. They will just barely touch the top of your rear wheel wells when fully stuffed. If you lift your truck 2.5" or less in the future you should still be happy with the size.
I'm very happy with my Nitto Terra Grapplers. Quiet, good in the snow, balanced out well, affordable. Standard AT performance off-road.
Here is a pic with said tires without a lift. Hope this helps.
Edit: My spare fits no problem. But rubs a lot off-road as it sits pretty low. I have not tried a bike rack into the receiver but none of my trailer receivers have interfered with the spare. I have an OEM receiver hitch. Speedometer is off by 6%

If you just want a little bigger tires, get the 285/75/16 Revos. These are a tad taller and only affect your speedometer by about 4%, your acceleration isn't impacted as much either, and the spare fits fine under the 80 but now I can't fit my bike rack into the tow hitch as well as before.
A lift = money. A big lift = a lot of money. The cheap alternative is to get spacers.
All I know is that I started with a 2 1/2" suspension lift (springs, shocks, steering dampner, bushings), but the stock tires looked too small. I got the 285 revos and it was better, but still looked at little high. Got the Slee bumper and the Hanna Sliders and it looks better. A winch and dual batteries will probably get me at the right stance.
I look like a low rider when we go camping with 5 passengers, all the gear in the back, and luggage on top.

I agree on no larger than 295s stock. Mine scrub a little in the rear fully flexed.

Roger that guys! All of your ideas are great. I now have alot to think about. Im gettn excited. I went to the slee web page and that was a great help. Im thinking a 2 1/2" suspension lift (springs, shocks, steering dampner, bushings)Quick question is that considered a med lift??? and some 285s. That should be perfect I wont be over loading my truck.

If your going to lift it I'd just go straight to 315/75r16 but thats just me. But I'm sure based on our locations mine sees more trail time on the rocks. For a 99% DD rig the smaller tires 285 or 295 would be better.

This is what I just ordered through Costco 33.12.50 X15 BF Goodrich Mud Terrains KM2, stock height, gone off road without problems. I was offered the Mudzilla but I declined, (bit too aggresive for daily use).

I got my suspension kit from slee. I was going to get the medium kit listed in their web site:
'91-'97 Toyota Land Cruiser Old Man Emu Medium Load 2.5" Kit
However, I also ordered the Slee ShortBus bumper and they recommended that I get the heavy springs for the front. So, I got the heavy 850 front springs instead of the medium 851 front springs. Everything else in the kit stayed the same.
This gives you a more level stance.
Just remember that the higher the lift, the more modifications you need to restore the geometry.
Here are some observations after having this lift for a couple of years:
1. You need to adjust the LSPV (load sensing proportioning valve) after the lift to balance out your brakes. It's an easy mod. Others have modified something else that I can remember the name, but it's the other side of the LSPV. [Found it. It's the Load Sensing Spring Assembly LSSA]. The lift causes the brakes to be applied unevenly, so you have to make some adjustments.
2. You might want to consider using the blue bushings which correct the angle a little more than the yellow bushings.
3. The ride is firm when unloaded. If my whole family is in the car (all 5 of us), the ride feels better. If we have our luggage, then the ride is about right.
I also needed to tow a small trailer for Boy Scouts gear, so this setup worked out great for me.
So, you have to know what mods you plan to do, so you can get the right suspension kit. It changes based on your mods/needs.

35's, or 315's (35's in metric). But like I said, they will rub.
Most guys will run 285's (33's) on a stock truck, they fill out the wheel wells just enough and you can still turn without rubbing. See jvazquez53's pics above for reference.

I think you would be happy with the 285/75/16 Nittos and the "medium" lift kit from OME. I did the 850/860 combo as many others have on this site. Here are before and after pics of mine with the lift as well as a close up of the Nittos.

I ran 33x12.50R16 Trxus M/Ts on my 80 with no lift and they fit perfectly. Trxus are a "true" 33" tire and I think it was the biggest I could go without rubbing. HTH

4wheelparts.com does free shipping to their stores, which are everywhere. the free shipping usually makes their price the best since shipping these is quite a bit.
