Any interesting parts from the Middle East?

My sister will be in Qatar for a month, and I was wondering if there are interesting parts not available here in NA that I could have her bring back.

Cheers;

I got a OEM Pintle from a breakers in the industrial area just outside Doha on the way to Mesaieed. It was heavy to carry back to the UK in my hand luggage but worth it! (Can't get the pintle's in England)

maybe sub fuel tank, or inclinometer/compass, or factory swing out tire carrier. although you can get those sent here and most of them are kind of bulky.

Factory swing out would be a very tough installation as they mount to hard points welded on the inside of the body. US models don't have that hardware. Seems like there is a lot of Middle East equipment we don't get so having her capable of going to a breaker (junk yard) would be a bonus.

Even in relatively modern Qatar, I suspect a sister like that is going to be considered a bit adventurous.

Check to see if there was an option for power folding mirrors for left hand drive models (LHD). There is a little button marked RETRACT on the stock mirror adjustment button. You will need the button, control box and mirrors.

subtank, 80 dual filler neck, subtank dash switch, 4500 rear quarter panel stickers, both DS/PS sunvisor, front fender sidemarker lights, if possible cool box and associated parts, altimeter/fuel gauge overhead console, oem winch, vinyl/cotton/leather rear tire cover, that's all I can think of.

Use their dirhams or their local money not US dollars. Good luck.

She will feel very odd going into their "industrial areas" (wrecking yards). Even if she does, negotiating with the junkyard dealers will be tough for her. She should get an Arabic speaking male to go along and do the talking. I tried getting a bunch of stuff when I worked in Abu Dhabi, and wasn't very successful. It does not go cheap. But, good luck!

4x4CPOSEADOG basically summed up the list of Middle East goodies. Basically every other vehicle on the road here is a Landcruiser, so there's no shortage of used parts. Streets 8-10 in the Industrial Area are where you want to go. I have not had any problems finding or buying stuff. Need to be prepared to negotiate a little though, i.e offer half of what they ask for initially. . .

You mean these emblems are not on every LC?

US spec 80's have nothing on the hood. And if I remember correctly, then south american one don't have anything either, but not sure.

I've been to Doha a few times and can second that sentiment. Be a good brother; don't ask her to bring anything back.

If you happen to get the overhead console with compass, be sure to get the sensor mounted on the headliner aft/above the 2nd-row seats (and the bracket holding the sensor as well).

But as others have said, it would be a bit too much for a non-native, non-cruiserhead woman/person to be visiting a junk yard, especially in that part of the world.

If it's the overhead console with compass/altimeter and the sensor, I've got a used unit if anyone wants to tackle it, but you'll have to either cut your existing sunvisors shorter, etc...

G'luck!

If you would like to see picture of junkyard in Middle East, check the last page of this thread to give you an idea to see if you still would like to send your sister in junkyards over there: http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...t-specs-3.html Good luck though.

Looks exactly like the junkyards in North Hollywood.

I've lost the address, but there's a junkyard in the huge "Industrial Area" in Sharjah (just immediately east of Dubai) that specializes in Cruisers, and has complete bodies, winches, and had at least one complete (!) "fully-optioned" (w/winch) diesel powered, stick shift, right hand drive 80. Since they are a left hand drive country, I don't know where that one came from. No, he wouldn't sell the winch only. I found a fully-optioned 1997 80 for sale in Abu Dhabi, winch, leather (unusual for over there), rear a/c, dual tanks, sunroof, rear spare, etc. And, naturally, no rust, Asking price was 45,000 dirhams, around $15,000. I tried to low-ball him, but he wouldn't bite, as these are beginning to be hard to find, and popular for the younger set to go "dune bashing". I had thought seriously about buying it, but the job ended too quickly, and we had to leave.

How long ago was this? I have a friend going over there real soon. Maybe he can check it out for me if you can find that address or even just a name.

Ned, those pictures where taken in Sharjah's Industrial Area. The good looking 80 outside the junkyard belongs to the owner of that yard. When I was there late 06/early 07 there were two 80s being part out and those guys under the truck were taking the subtank for me.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I was thinking more along the lines of smaller items (decals, switches) which she could purchase at a dealer that could be packed in her luggage . Her husband went along, so going to a junk yard isn't out of the question especially now that I can them directions. I'd love to brink back a complete vehicle, but it looks like it's not cheap to purchase.

Cheers;

Another list for small items that will fit in her luggage. VX, GXL, VX-R, 24 VALVE, and Toy hood ornament emblems. OEM fog/driving light switches, 4500 with TWIN CAM, windshield and body panels decals that says "Land Cruiser"

Hill- I left in March 2009, so the yard is still there. He had five or six complete 80 bodies, all kinds of other bodies, and lots of other parts laying around, including 1/2 cuts. It was well organized, and run by some Indian guys. The left drive 80 w/winch was outside the gate. Across the street was a lot full of Toyotas, including some new 70 series pickups. I'll find and post the pics.
