97 power steering leak ?

Ihave the same rusty paper clip leak that most have had. Temped in some hose until my cooler arrives. Ilost alot of fluid. I am going on 3qts.right now and can't find a leak. Where is it going? Every weekend when I drive it at least 10 miles I have to add at least 5-6 ozs. Does the pump and steering box hold that much?

it could be leaking out of the front seal of the pump and into the oil pan. If you can't find any stains on the pavement then that is likely the problem.

And ATF in that kind of quantity isn't real good for the engine.

I thought only the diesels ran gear drive p/s pumps allowing that kind of fluid transfer?

X2
check your oil level asap
Ive saw this 1st happen on a 93 fzj80 back in 03 while wheeling he added over 2 qts in a a couple of days but couldn't find a leak till he checked the oil and it was way overfull and black in color even though he had changed it the week before .
He did say the motor was super clean inside when he changed the valve cover gasket while he was in there working on replacing the PS pump

I just rebuilt a PS pump today and all the seals where rock hard and brittle as hell. If it's the original I'd rebuild it regardless.

I'm not sure I understand the question. "I have the same rusty paper clip leak..." (translation: my cooler has a leak and it's coming out here). Then you ask "where is it going"?? Um, I'll guess it's going onto the ground???

I think you need to clarify A) what's happening and B) what your question is.

looks to me Doug that he did a temporary fix with some hose to solve the PS cooler leak but is still loosing fluid.

It's not the oil pan gasket but the one of the front of the PS pump. The pump is a gear driven type and the front of it is inside the front cover of the engine. When that seal fails ATF/PS fluid leaks into the front of the engine.

Check the oil level first. It's it's over full then that is likely the problem.

Yeah, I'm just puzzled that his paper clip was leaking and what he did - cut the paper clip and put a rubber chunk in, or simply bypass the paper clip? 'Cause I'm unclear if he's now POSITIVE he stopped the external leaks of all the PS hoses? Or not? If so, then yep it's an internal leak and Rick's got that covered. But if it's still weeping down various hoses an we suggest he tear into the $$$ pump replacement as well as the $$$ price of the paper clip and its attached hose then we might be reaching pretty deeply in to his wallet needlessly.

Keep us posted.

Doug, Sorry I confused you. I was trying not to be long winded about a common problem.(P.S. cooler leak).I spliced in some rubber hose until Summit sends me my new cooler. The old cooler rusted thru where the clips hold it to the frame.Lost lots of fluid before I was able to patch the line.No more drips or leaking. I have added over 2qts of fluid so far.Common sense tells me there is a problem. Nowere have I been able to find fluid capacity for the power steering system. Thanks again to everyone. Will keep you posted on what I find saturday.

The capacity is 0.8L (0.9 US qts) of Dexron ATF.
