Muffler blow apart

The muffler on my 80 is coming apart at the seams. The back panel (end cap) has separated from the rest of the can. Would that be from to much back pressure or just because? I can have my friend weld it but I don't want to do that if the muffler is plugged.

usaly when a muffler blows apart its from two things. First is from a large back fire. second is from age, most mufflers are made from light gauge steel and welding it back together is amost imposible

waste of time to try and weld the muffler, get a new one. Age and wear is what kills them unless its rust.

So if I'm going with a new muffler is 3" to much for the stock 4.5L? If I did 3" from the cat back then next summer had the rest of the exhaust done would I look to much low end?

Are you running a FI motor?

If you're NA, then 3" is probably too much. 2.5" is more than enough.

Mine had the back of the muffler blow out last weekend on the highway on my way to a camping trip. The weld was rusted and not the back cap rattles like crazy. I ordered a Borla cat back and am going to put it on this weekend.
