Turn carpet into rubber mat?
I've been anxious to get rid of the carpeting inside my FJ80. So far in my search for a rubber mat to replace it, I haven't been too impressed. I remember that someone had a brilliant idea buried within one of the threads....why not just coat the existing carpet with some rubber, bedliner or similar paint? Seems like a great solution since you know you the fit will be perfect. Has anyone given this a try? Any recommendations on what to use as the coating?

I don't know what to coat the carpet with. I would think any kind of coating would crack if used on carpet.
My work van has a full length rubber mat with a "jute" backing, this is a nice setup. If you spill something just wipe it. Same thing with muddy boots. I think the FJ cruisers have a similar setup. The aftermarket needs to jump on this. Probably not enough interest to be profitable.
Good luck with this project, keep us posted on what you find.

I was on a quest for just such a thing myself. Maybe other countries, AU, SA, UAE, etc... where cruisers are less of a luxury vehicle would be a source.

My 80 came with some Husky liners and they did not fit very well. The PO had to cut them to make them fit better, which is still not good. They could be for another vehicle. I have not shopped them in several years.

Hmm, doesn't sound like a good idea to me. The rug part would still soak up water, which is often why the rug needs to go from what I've seen in reading the posts here.
I think you'd be better off going with some of that bedliner stuff, which would tend to trap water less and prevent further rusting of the floor underneath.
My first Landcruiser was a FJ55 and it came with rubber, not carpet. It did have some sound-deadening on the back, but it was loud. But I'm sure you're anticipating that if you're going this way. Personally, that's why I like our new/used 80. It's so much quieter than the old ride.

I don't have any in my truck. TOY350 has them and they fit just about perfect. Obviously designed for the 80's, though there is a bit of play in them.
Cool part of them is that they all have lips, so if you get water, mud, sand, etc in them, it stays in there (until you pull it out). TOY350 really likes his, and I would get a set if I didn't intend to bedline the floor of my truck.

I have the Huskies and they fit great. The second row seat liner blocks the rear heat a little.
Or try E9999's idea: http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...-more-$14.html

Just keep checking ebay. I saw an OEM molded rubber replacement for the carpet not too long ago when I was pricing Husky mats. I just tried searching completed listings but couldn't find it again.

flooring
if i was going to go through the hassle of pulling all the carpet and sound deadening material from my 80's I would just take it and have it Line-X'ed or have some type of bedliner sprayed in. If you're that concerned about ditching the carpet, seems that it would be in your better interest to ditch it all. I've seen the PVC floor coverings that you can get, they're not bad, but you would need to put down a mild adhesive to prevent them from moving around. Even then, you chance moisture getting caught under it..

I run Huskey Liners and they are great... I don't have any pics of mine in the rig, but this is what they are.

I am contemplating pulling my carpet from the rear and replacing it with this Diamond-Grip (Diamond Steel Deck Pattern) Rubber Mats and Runners.
I have sound-deadening already installed and will just lay it on top.

In my old '88 FJ-62, I painted the carpet in the cargo area with Herculiner (bought at Autozone) and it came out great.
I only had the vehicle for a year after Herculining the carpet, but it held up pretty well during that period.
I think a small can was $30 or so; not too expensive if you wanted to experiment on some scrap carpet or floor mats.

Guess I should have thought it through more to begin with. Less than 6 months ago I completely sound-deadened my FJ80. Otherwise, the bedliner route is probably the way I would go if I could be convinced that it dampens noise fairly well. But after the fairly large investment, I certainly don't want to tear it all out and start over. This is why I primarily looking for something to lay over it now.
