PHH Questions

Hi
I just bought a 94 Cruiser with 200,000 on the ticker. I am in the process of baselining the truck. I ordered the front axle service kit with bearings form CDan and plan to do the transfer case and diffs and a tranny flush and fill while I am at it. (You guys have some great ideas in regards to a tranny flush)
As I have been exploring this site I also found it to be a good idea to do a flush and fill on the cooling system. I went to the Cruiser and found what appears to be an original PHH (I don't know the real name). Is it bad? What should it be replaced with if necessary? Any tips?

Thanks for all of the help

It can look fine on the outside and still be bad. The cost of it failing can be catastrophic. Conidering the age, it is a really good idea to replace it. There is a kit (I forget who sells it) available that has either a Gates Green Stipe hose or a silicone hose with constant tenstion clamps. I think it costs around $20 Edit, here is the kit with the Gates green stripe http://www.1fzfephh.com/GreenStripe.html

Do a search on PHH. I decided to use the blue silicone hose w/ constant torque clamps on both my 80's.

Any tips? [/QUOTE]

There's lots of info on here about the PHH--just search. IMO, a PHH bypass is the way to go. A lot less headache.

That's definitely factory original. You'll want to replace it if you're planning trips too far past the city limits. Looks a little like it's been seeping already.

I purchased the blue hose kit and had the local dealership do it when they catching up on some other deferred maintenance and had it up on the rack. They charged me and hour and a half of labor. Better them cussing at it than me considering my flaky back and shoulder.

Just ordered the blue silicone hose kit with the constant torque clamps.

Better safe than sorry. This will be my wife's rig.

Any tips on ease of installation besides removing the starter

Carefully cut the old clamps off with a dremel.

Unbolt and move the transmission fluid fill tube out of the way.

Search threads and FAQ. Plenty of good ideas and illustrations there.

Wear a long sleeve shirt you don't mind throwing away. I did and it got all torn up. The shirt prevented tearing up my arms but they were bruised up the next day.
