Stock subwoofer replacement

Who would be interested in a subwoofer that is a direct fit for the stock location but performs better?

Going to be testing a handful of subwoofers we have access to over the next couple weeks to see what performs better on the OEM setup without touching anything except the subwoofer itself. No additional amps/wiring/etc...

We've had some really good luck on other Toyota platforms with OEM replacement subwoofers. I'm guessing the results will be pretty nice on the 80 series as well. I'll update as we test.

Pound that. I'd be interested to know what will fit, even if it requires an aux amp.

If someone can find a center console out of an LX that I can get here for testing I can make sure it will work in the LX as well. I'll pay for it of course, just haven't been able to find one yet.

Isn't part of the issue there with the amp that drives it?

You probably will need a small amp to drive a reasonable sub to get good response there. When I removed my sub, it had hardly any sound coming out of it, which I determined was the amp. When I unplugged it, the headliner speakers started working. I just replaced with a small self-contained unit that fit in there.

That being said, if you can get something together that will work in there, that would be great!

If your amp is working, it will do fine. If your amp is not working, then that's a whole other story.

Would be interested in options for the 80 (blown)

Would be interested in options for the LX for better sound (still working for now)

Don't have one to send you but I have a pic of what it looks like...Not that it will help much but...

I think most people would agree the factory sub amp is underpowered and a hassle to fool with when doing audio installs and would probably be up for replacing it with something that will help deliver some meaningful bass notes.

If I can assist by taking measurements (no, you can't have my console!) then I'd be happy to do that in the meantime.

Let me know.

Does anyone have more detailed pictures of the LX assembly where the sub actually mounts? Can someone take some photos of the LX sub/assembly with a tape measure or ruler placed along one side of the sub, and then diagonally across the center of the sub?

If no one gets to it for you before mid-October I'd be happy to get you what you need...I just won't have time until then. IIRC the sub is just a little 4" one. Some more pics of the console etc. can be found here if you are interested in the time being

I will be passing through Austin the first weekend of Oct. for a local club run to Marble Falls. You should join us. You could take a look at my console and take all the measurements you like. Depending on how long you need it, I might be able to leave it with you for a bit. Let me know.

Do you need an actual console, or will dimensions work?

Good luck finding a 4" sub. I did find one that looked like a good option, but it was only available in the UK for a short while and is no longer produced.

If you could find a sub and amp to replace the existing sub and CD changer (as the changer is useless), I'd bite in a heart beat.

Why is the changer useless? Mine works well.

Ditto...And I've picked up a couple extra cassettes for cheap on ebay that I've loaded up with CDs. Granted, an Ipod/MP3 ready or capable head unit would be great and negate the need for CDs all together but until then CDs it is for me

Neither of mine works. SOMETIMES they'll work. If you're not in motion. And the engine is turned off. And you don't speak. Or move. Or blink.

It's really common for them to be incredibly sensitive to vibrations that render them essentially useless. TBH, I forget they are there.

I'm interested, however it would have to be as cost effective & sound as good or better than the Kenwood KSC-SW10 that others have mounted into the LC OEM location. Kenwood powered sub can be had on Ebay for approx $150 shipped.

Kenwood - KSC-SW10

Right now I have a Kicker 6.5" Mid Bass speaker mounted on to the factory bracket. It's powered by my Alpine 5 channel amp. It doesn't produce sub-woofer bass, but fills out the bottom end a little bit and with the bass shakers my stereo sounds pretty decent right now (the factory door locations have the usual Pioneer 2 way replacements).

I'm going to be building a box and mounting a shallow mount 8" Kicker subwoofer in the near future...also in the factory location. I don't want it to look like I have something else in there other than a factory speaker. I'm anticipating the improvement in bass will be significant.

Okay, tore everything apart and looking at various woofers we have to see what will work best without modifying too much.
