1r78, yes, a sealed or properly ported enclosure is far superior to a free air setup. Yes, the material, volume, shape all make a difference.

CycloSteve/Nay, although I think that's a cool little solution, I think there's far more you can do in that space while still making it an easy installation.

Steelbender77, the factory amps really don't suck that bad in most cases. In the case of the 96 land cruiser I'm testing with, it just simply didn't put out much power at all though. Since the LX450 has a SUBwoofer setup, I feel it may have some more potential with the stock amp, and also with the stock enclosure with an aftermarket matched amp and subwoofer. We'll find out soon

Yossarian, I'll see what we can do. Might take me some time though, pretty swamped at the moment.

I know, the powered sub mod basically mates up well to a "regular" head unit replacement and some decent door speakers. Brings it into the 21st century on a basic level for very little spend and no interior space compromise.

My thought is doing much more with the sub and you'd better do much more with the entire system, and the door speakers have so much limitation in install space for a basic replacement.

As far as putting a sub back into the system, the powered route is about as simple as it gets and it is extremely easy to wire directly to the HU.

Methinks the effort/benefit ratio is tough on these trucks, but you can baseline the system effectively for not much coin.

anybody do a 8 or 10 inch shallow mount sub in the stock location in a custom box. Some of the 10" shallow mount subs only need a box of .4cubic ft. That is a small box. I was thinking of making a plexiglass box for the location and mounting it to the metal bracing in that area. Might have to cut into the storage box a bit, but I don't mind. Sony makes a small 500 watt mono amp that should mount under the drivers seat if you move the remote unit a bit. This will keep the amp dry and safer than placing it in one of the rear storage areas. running the wires is pretty easy. Should be able to do the whole install in a few hours and end up with real base. If I get around to it any time soon I will post up.

Ah...but thats too easy. We could all go get a box big or small and put it in the back of our rig. We want something that sounds good but does not take up space. I have too much stuff going in and out of the back of my cruiser for a box to be back there...surf gear, kids, soccer stuff, dogs, all stuff I don't want in contact with a sub. Sure I could just take it out, but then I don't have the sub. Thats why the stock location is what we are looking for.

Sorry for the wait guys. Got busy with a few projects and this got put on hold.

If there's anyone with a landcruiser that has a WORKING factory stereo system with the factory amplifiers still wired in and no other amplifiers or other modificaitons to the stereo system, let me know if you want to help with testing. PM or email me please.

Same with the LX450 guys...

The truck is completely stock.

Mine has an aftermarket stereo in it, but still has the amp and sub (though the wiring was done poorly, I need to go back in and fix it).

I just posted a thread about front door speakers that fit behind the stock grilles on a '91 with no modifications/ drilling etc. Gotta say these speakers are awesome! I only have these speakers in the truck and bypassed the amp. They are powered by my head unit.

Sounds good. I'll get one ordered that I've had my eye on for the LX450 footprint and have you test it out to see what you think.

Same with mine. '95 80. I put Sony XPlods in the doors front and back, but still have the factory head unit, factory amp, and factory sub, all still connected and running.

my amp got here last week and the sub should be here today. Give me a week or so to make a box and I will report back.

Anyone considered the JL Audio 13TW5? It's new to me and I don't even know if it will fit in the factory sub location. It's only has a 2.5 inches mounting depth. Diameter may be a problem, I don't know. I haven't taken any measurements. I'm sure it would require signifiacantly more modification than using the factory bracket but the results would probably be worth it. It seems like the factory sub location on the LC would be much better than the one on the LX.

I've always had good results with JL subs and would like to make one work, even if it was only a 6w3 or 8w3.

That looks like a really nice unit but way beyond my sound budget personally (JL Audio 13TW5)
