Baktasht - Thanks

*Sure, but the factory amp won't be able to drive it properly. We'll look at other options for larger woofers/subwoofer for the folks that want more bass after this is complete*

I dunno if this is of any use whatsoever, but here's a photo of the sticker on the stock headunit amplifier (the one under the dash, not the sub amp) from a 96 LC.

Also, from looking at my wiring diagram, the stock sub amplifier in the back of the LC will still get a signal from an aftermarket headunit attached via the two grey plugs. So this speaker upgrade should benefit everyone with an LC.

If this has been covered already...

I was wondering if the person who came up with the 4ohm replacement woofer for the LX has tried it yet? I'm curious of the difference between the 2ohm and the 4ohm speakers in regards to output. There were some questions about it in earlier posts but I have yet to see resolution. Mine is working fine now but would be interested in upgrading depending on the cost involved.

You guys missed this thread?

Dual 6" powered sub, mounted in stock location. Simple, you don't have to worry about amps because it is powered, adds very nice low end (nothing amazing) to your system, powered directly from the batt.

$150 and about 4 hours of your time. Mine has been in for a year and a half.

I ordered 3 other woofers that I think may be a better match than what we've tested so far. Some of these are very power hungry woofers that just don't put out enough volume. I think I've found a more effecient one that will put out better sound at the lower wattage that the OEM amplifier is supplying.

I need someone with a Land Cruiser with a woofer in the rear quarter panel and a multimeter to do me a favor.

* Take the side panel off
* Take the three 10mm bolts that hold the assembly to the car off and lay it down on the floor of the trunk area speaker facing down.
* With the wires still connected to the woofer assembly, turn on the radio. Go through and see if any of the wires have give you voltage, mainly looking for which set gives you 12V. Just going off of typical color codes, I'm guessing the red is 12V always on and the yellow is 12V switched. But I could definitely be wrong.

Let me know what you find. I've tested with 3 amps on the truck I have here and it just isn't putting out much power.

You're still using the stock amp, yes?

I don't think many people have been particularly impressed with it.

Yup, the factory amp. It's not spectacular, but it will work just fine for what it is. This project is to get a replacement woofer that will work well with the factory amp as a plug and play solution. After we're all done with this one we'll look at making a custom enslosure for a larger subwoofer that will be able to put out more bass.

don't know if this helps, but I'm too lazy to clear the back of my LC at the moment. But not too lazy to look at the FSM (because it is sitting here next to me).

It shows there should be 4 wires going to the SW amp and 5 wires going away, so to speak.

Gray - appears to be power from the cigarette lighter circuit
Red/Black tracer - Positive from Amp outlet of head unit
Yellow (-) and Black (+) are the speaker inputs from the head unit (same ones as used for the left rear speaker)

White/Black tracer is ground
Light Green/Red (-) and Light green/Black (+) are the wires to the woofer
White (-) and Red (+) are the wires for the Right rear speaker.

Hope that helps.

I've attached the wiring diagram for my 96 LC. It appears that pin 9 (grey) is switched 12V and pin 7 (white with black) is ground. There is no switched 12V.

Hope that helps!

Upon further review, I think 96r50 is correct - Gray is the switched power. I edited my original post to correct the error.

Ok. Perfect. I might need to just get 12v from another source. Looks like I'm not getting power to the woofer amp for whatever reason.

So.... 19 woofers later, and the verdict is, there's no hope for the stock woofer amp in the LC. What a huge disappointment. I've always been able to find a good matching speaker for any Toyota setup that I've played around with, but this thing simply does not put out enough juice for anything. Even the most effecient and low power woofer I found at 25 watts (4ohms) barely did any good.

That idea has been ditched officially. We'll still see if we can find a good match for the LX450 guys. That should be slightly easier since it's a subwoofer setup and has a half-way decent enclosure.

For the Land Cruiser guys we'll see if we can get something together to fit the stock location with it's own amp. Stay tuned.

Thanks for doing the foot work. I would still be interested in a plug and play option with an aftermarket amp.

I don't no if you caught what I posted before, but those of us with 96/97 LC's have some kind of brace in the door severly limiting speaker options with the stock grill. If you have access to non market speakers, maybe a whole kit, F/R and sub?

Why bother? The LX450 amp sucks too and I'd wager most of us with aftermarket radios are bypassing it anyway.

Would just love to know the best sub/amp combo that will fit in in the center console area!

I'd love to do the Scion 6 disk changer with a mini-amp in the stock CD changer location, and a little 4" woofer in the stock location. That'd be the ideal setup for me in terms of a balance between price and sound.

Ditto some of the above comments...if a decent speaker exists which can fit in the factory location, and we just need to find a decent small amp to compliment it, I would consider that a good solution...pull power and speaker inputs from the factory plug...just my $0.02, as I already have the Kenwood upgrade done on my truck.

Hmmm....

Still talking about how to get power to a sub that fits in the stock mount area.

How about a powered sub that bolts in and runs directly to the battery for power?

Post # Ninety Seven. Maybe the rest of you can't see it?

One thing that I have wondered is how much of a difference would it make if the subwoofer was sealed instead of just open?

And one more question is does the enclosure material make a huge difference? I was thinking of welding up the original mount to enclose it. Maybe line it with dynamat. Just kicking around ideas.

Yes, #97 is the same system I went with several months ago. Nothing spectacular, but it is 100x what the stocker put out.

Would like some real bass, as I am used to the Bose system in my Audi, which has a sub in one of the rear quarters which is tiny, but well tuned...rocks the car.
