It really depends on what the factory amplifier is able to handle. With most OEM setups that have a 2ohm sub, you can usually use a 4ohm as a replacement, but sometimes you can't. It will just take some testing for us to find a good fit.
Yeah, I realize that...I was just mentioning it because if the original speaker was 2 ohm (speaking of the LX450) and you replace it with a 4 ohm speaker, then functionally you probably cut output in half. I know it's not quite as simple as that...but there's a big difference.

And usually you worry about whether an amp is able to take the lower impedance rating rather than the other way around...do you not?

Ya, this is more for the folks that still have the OEM head unit. I guess you could also use the speaker we provide in the factory enclosure with an aftermarket amp? But personally if I was already that far into it I'd just get a custom enclosure made for a good 10" sub and amp and call it a day.

various amps respond differently to different ohm ratings on speakers. And I have no way to know what the specs are on the factory amp since they're not published. But I can definitely tell you the results of the testing and whether we can provide something that performs better than the stock unit when we're done testing

A while back I was pointed this direction by a fellow mudder named blarsen.

4'' Shielded Aluminum Cone Woofer | MCM Audio Select | 55-1854 (551854)

I purchased the woofer but I have had the time to install in my rig yet.

The last of the woofers got in today for the land cruiser setup. Will start testing later today and should finish by end of day tomorrow. Trying to squeeze all this in between other thing. I'll report back with the results.

$13? Seriously?

Hmm, just need an amp to go along with it.

What's a good amp to match it? I'm assuming that since it's a 4" cone, you just need a little amp to push it.

I fail at the whole matching amps and woofers.

Keep in mind that is a woofer, not a subwoofer. It might sound better than stock, but there also may be better options out there. Just from looking at the specs it might work well as a subwoofer in the LX. Also, make sure you get an amp with a crossover

Okay, the only two 7" woofers that we tested are okay, but not worth the time. There are four 6.5" woofers that we're looking at, tried one of them so far, and it's pretty decent, better than I expected. I'll try the other 3 tomorrow and report back with final results, photos of the install, any necessary modifications, pricing, etc...

Looks like I might have accidentally killed my OEM amp, oops I'll have some more free time later tonight to play with it. 1 more sub to test.

This is more than likely the woofer we'll be going with. Once I can get the little issue fixed that I was having with the OEM amplifier to finish testing I'll let you guys know for sure.

I do not use the OEM amp because of my after market Pioneer Premier head unit. Would I need to use a seperate amp for this speaker?
What would you suggest?

Not to mention those that have done the Scion head unit install. Granted one connector is not hooked up for the mod to work. Will Those mentioned above need a seperate amp or is the OEM amp still powering the amp in rear quarter? I figure that since I had to unplug the amp, that I will need a seperate amp.

What size is that sub & who makes it?

Good question scotia, I have a Scion HU too with no pre amp out puts. I'm guessing this is a no go item untill I get another HU with RCA outputs since the Scion HU's have an internal amp.

If your factory amp is not connected and/or not working you'll need to add a small amp to drive the woofer. I'll put some packages together for you guys when we finish up the testing to make it a fairly easy installation.

The ones I'm testing are from various manufacturers and range in size from 7", 6 3/4" and 6.5"

Awesome.

Would love to know the best aftermarket amp/sub combo for the LX. Was thinking about fitting a small amp in where the CD changer used to live and putting the mini subwoofer in the stock location in front of the center console. Would you mind including this sort of setup as one of your packages?

Many thanks!

I'll let you guys know for the LX here in the next few weeks. I have access to countless numbers of speakers from all sorts of different companies. The LX will probably fit something around a 3.5-4.25" subwoofer. What I have access to in those sizes ranges from $5 all the way to $200+. It's just a matter of picking a few that are good matches from the factory specs listed, test them, and see what performs better.

I think he wanted to know what the make of this exact sub was, rather than which subs you were testing.

I'll find out for you. These are all un-branded direct from manufacturers.

From the look of the sub bracket in post #74, can't you just fabricate a bracket with a larger opening to accomodate a standard 8" or 10" sub and build a MDF enclosure behind it to fit the stock location under the trim panel. A larger speaker would probabally yield better sound.

Sure, but the factory amp won't be able to drive it properly. We'll look at other options for larger woofers/subwoofer for the folks that want more bass after this is complete.

Count me in as interested in the sub with a plug n' play amp to replace the factory parts.

Count me in for a stock upgrade, not as interested in really loud systems anymore, just better sound at minimal cost.

baktasht, since you have access to speakers apparently not available to the public, how about a whole car kit, fronts, rears, and a sub all not requiring surgury?

BTW, my origonal head unit in my 97 has lost the backlighting on the tuning side. Whats the latest on OEM head unit replacements?
