Now you just need to find a baby amp that'll fit in the CD changer location, and I'll be happy.

OEM woofer, YUCK! I have 5 different woofers on the way that are the best match to see what will work better with the amount of space we're working with and with the factory amplifier. Should be here early next week. For a luxury SUV that was definitely not cheap when it was new, I'm pretty disappointed with what they've used for a woofer. Oh well, more reason to upgrade

The newer ones have much nicer sound systems. The difference, I believe, is that '98+ is designed as a luxury SUV, '97- is designed with a work vehicle in mind.

One expansion on the idea would be to fab a bracket to possible house a larger sub with mounting options for a aftermarket amp. I ended using what you have in the pic above as my amp bracket and run a external sub enclosure. Just an idea.

I agree that using the OEM bracket / 4" sub does not offer much of an upgrade regardless of speaker quality. I hope you prove me wrong. New bracket holding 8", 10" could be a huge improvement.

The factory woofer on the Land Cruiser is around 6.6" in size. Slightly larger than a 6.5". We can probably fit a 7" in there. I'll let you know next week when we do the with the subs that are coming in for testing.

The Lexux LX450 is the one that has the small subwoofer around 4" that is installed in the center console between the two front seats.

The other ideas are nice, but the goal of this little project is to get a good replacement for the factory woofer/subwoofer without changing anything else, while still getting better sound. We can look at other plug'n'play options later on for people that want to go with packages that can provide bass in the range of what a good 8-10" subwoofer can do.

I like the idea of a simple replacement.

The LX450 sub measured 4" and here are some shots. Let me know if you need other measurements.

wearsabrowncoat. Can you take a measurement from mounting hole to mounting hole diagonally, and another from hole to hole adjecent? If you can get the measurement as close as possible, within 1/8" would be awsome! That way I can make sure we look at the correct subs for replacement. OEM setups sometimes use sizes that arent exactly typical. If we get it as close as possible it'll make installation much easier.

I measured both ways diagonally and came up with 4 5/8"
And again all adjacent and got 3 1/4"

Great, I hope you find something. I notice the lack of bass with it out. I guess it must perform better than the LC unit as it is enclosed.

The stock speaker is about 2" deep, but for a replacement you could go with something as deep as 4". If you remove some of the baffle material you could probably go 6".

I noticed a slight improvemnet when I had it hooked up to the Kendwood. Of course all the speakers sounded better.

I'm looking for the type of improved I had when I replaced the rear speakers with some infinitys - louder without any distortion.

An amp MIGHT help. But for a sub as small as 4" I really doubt you can push it much more than the stock amp. If you're going to get into extra amps and such it's probably time to upgrade to a different enclosure/sub.

The selected test woofers for the Land Cruiser should be here on Monday. I'll be looking at 4" subs we have available later today to see what our best options are.

I've disabled my factory amp as part of my head unit install - I know a lot of people have done the same.

I'd even be interested in dropping a small single channel amp in there, or better yet a powered sub.

For me I'm not so much concerned about the uber deep/loud bass. I just want something to round out the bottom end.

My old MR2 had dual 12" subs. Now that was some bass.

A single powered Sub would probably work best for me.

Sounds like you are wanting more than what a small 4" sub can provide. I'd bet that you'll be much happier with a properly setup 10" sub.

No doubt, but I'd rather be lazy and use the same location.

There's no real good spots to mount a sub in the LX. Stock location is too small. Any other location requires cutting.

When I replace it with an 8" shallow mount sub, it will have a proper box and I will not be using the factory bracket, but the location of the speaker will be the same so that it somewhat lines up with the factory grille on the panel.

the stock 4" sub in the lexus is a 2ohm, the factory woofer in the back of the landcruiser's is a 4ohm. That will be taken into consideration, but you should also keep in mind that just because the factory pieces have a certain resistand (ohm rating) does not mean that you cannot use a different speaker with a different resistance rating. It really depends on what the factory amplifier is able to handle. With most OEM setups that have a 2ohm sub, you can usually use a 4ohm as a replacement, but sometimes you can't. It will just take some testing for us to find a good fit.

I installed the LX system with center console in my LC awhile back. I'd love a drop in replacement for the LX "sub", as I'm trying to keep the cockpit stock looking.

Check out blarsen's solution. If you don't mind cutting.

Many of us have lost the factory amp. Either because we're using an aftermarket deck, or an aftermarket sub.
