Reasons why I shouldn't get an FZJ80...

Well well, it's that time for me to get my 80, now that my daughter has claimed the 62 as hers. Here are the details::

There is a 93 FZJ80 for sale w/ 205k miles for $4900.

Pros: 100% Ca cruiser. Never been off-roaded, pwr everything, no accidents, new brakes, a/c running ice cold, bearings & diff look good, tranny flushed recently & shifts smoothly, no visible leaks, H & L 4wd enable nicely.

Cons: no front/rear lockers, clear coat coming off on roof, rt mirror loose, missing left front wheel cap,
left rr tail light is cracked, front passenger seat motor not moving seat fwd, shift knob leather is worn down

mudder thoughts? Thx!
JZ

Seems a tiny bit high in this price environment for that mileage, but it's pretty hard to judge prices these days, with as much as they are fluctuating...usually downward.

The way I look at it, 200K mile Cruisers are a dime a dozen. If you fine one with less than 100K, then we can talk about whether it's worth over paying or not.

See what else is out there.

Too high of cost.

For reference, I bought 2 Cali cruisers (both brought up to Oregon by someone trying to sell them). Both had under 150k, both extremely clean. I paid $10,500 for the , and that was several years ago before the economy tanked. I paid $9,300 for mine, but it has lockers. And neither was a '93, which at least has the 1FZ but I prefer the OBDII and airbacks of the '96/'97 (and some late '95's).

Now a days with the whole "cash for clunkers" think, the prices are even lower.

If you wanna wheel it, wait for one with lockers. They turn up.

I have been looking for a 2nd cruiser for a while now. That seems like a high price for a non-locked cruiser with that mileage in that condition. I am looking only for a 96/97 model year. I am finding what look to be nice locked vehicles in CA for between $6,900 and $8,500 miles on them. I am looking for a low mileage vehicle so most are between 120k and 150k miles.

FYI - I have not been able to get one because I am on the East Coast and fail to get to them in time before they are sold. They are usually sold quickly.

As said, the price is too high. Outside of that, a head gasket replacement on any FZJ80 should be considered preventative maintenance and be taken care of if the Cruiser has 200K miles.

Look for one with a 3FE.

While I agree it seems a bit high and also agree there's no harm in passing it up as you should be able to find many similar mileage/condition cruisers in that price range, I wonder if the "cash for clunkers" has put a price floor on some vehicles. I think C4C is over, but when it was going it seems if any LC owner wanted a new car that got even marginal gas mileage the LC owner knew they would get $4500 from a dealer. So why sell it for less - hence all the nice Landcruisers being tortured on YouTube.

I disagree about headgaskets as PM unless you think 3FE Oil Galley Plugs should be replaced as PM. Some headgaskets have failed, but it is a small percentage. Look for signs of failure - if you don't see any I wouldn't worry.

I also like having OBDII (it seems most, if not all 95s have it as well as 96-97s) and having airbags.

Lockers? Nice for sure, but did your FJ62 have them? I guess it depends what you want out of your rig, but I wouldn't have passed up a good deal on a clean FZJ80 just because it lacked them.

My first thought..too high. I got my 94 146k w/lockers for $1500.00 with blown head gasket and some dints. But, I go offroad a ton. I didn't need a super clean one. My friend got a 92 (3fe) 210k for 2200.00 that is unbelevably clean, I mean clean. If lockers arn't important, I would offer $2500-$2700.00 no more. If he doesn't take, he'll wish he had later. If your not in a hurry, look like crazy, you'll find one ....cheep

if i'm not mistaken this guy owns a shop called San O tires, working on toyotas and hondas. former master mechanic at toyota. he's got a sign at his shop saying "Only OEM Parts"

Point is i think that '80 would be VERY healthy mechanically. price is out of this world but i would consider it if he decides to get his head out of his a$$ with that price!

very true. with all the mods, it's a great rig, just way outta my price range.

factory lockers aren't mandatory for me, it would definitely be nice to have. I only hit trails in the 62, no heavy rock-crawling, and manages fine.

I really want to get the 80 soon, and get ready for this year's Surf n Turf.

When I was looking prices were all over the place. Hard to judge. Just keep looking if it doesn't have everything you want. You won't regret waiting but you will regret getting something you really don't want just to have SOMETHING. I have seen them as cheap as $5000 for a Vortec converted fzj to $15k plus. The person you talk to always thinks it's worth what they are asking too.

still waiting...

91 - so true. after seeing the 80 again, this time in better light conditions, it wasn't as purdy as we thought.
so, the wait continues...

appreciate all the feedback!

Wait, you'll find something better for around 4-5k. Some people just don't realize that their beat up rigs aren't worth what they ask.

Yup, my very first LC was a 1992 with 40k miles on it about 10 or 11 years ago. Paid $10,500 for it even with all the oil leaks and slew of other problems it had.
