How's your temp? I notice mine does it more when really really Phoenix hot out. I have discovered that the t-stat is bad and needs "a changing" which is probably doing it. Also noticed the same thing after making the mistake of Circle K regular unleaded.
One day I'll figure how the sun in arizona is 2-3 times hotter then other places. Same big ball of fire.

Unfortunately, the factory guage will be rock solid throughout the entire "normal" range, including the hotter end of the scale, unless you've done the mod to make the guage read properly. Your rig could still be running really hot, but just not hot enough to move the needle past the dead zone into the red zone.

Is it possible that all the pinging issues are related to the fact that Gov changed fuel standards. I dont know if people realized but we went from Methanol in fuel to Ethanol in fuel. Later one sucks water into fuel like crazy

Try running some BG44K through it to do a little injector cleaning. The other thing to easily look for would be a vacuum leak at a connection or a hose. A lean condition may occur and cause the pinging.

The light throttle ping is very common in Toyota's of this vintage. My 3FE did this as well. I didn't have success getting rid of it until I rebuilt it, but I'm sure that some combination of top end cleaning (carbon build up on pistons, rebuilding the injectors, clean plugs, vacuum leaks...) probably could have solved it in a less drastic manner

You've gotten some good suggestions so far.
Make sure your cooling system is functioning properly. I had the same symptoms when my fan clutch was in the toilet.
I agree with running several cans of FI cleaner through the system. I like the Redline stuff, but it takes several tanks to notice a difference.

That only applies to 93-97. I was going up Parley's Canyon (pretty long mountain pass) with a bad fan clutch a few weeks ago, and I was able to monitor the engine temperature, through the gauge, so I didn't overheat.

I have the same thing happen. Only when running the a/c on the hottest days, 105-110 degrees. I figure it is probably heat soak of some kind as the temp gauge is normal. I have a whole new top end and radiator. Timing is stock.
