Question for the roof rack guys
When the mount sits in the gutter, is there anything between them or is it metal to metal? I've looked at tons of threads and think I can build my own, but I haven't seen anything about protecting the gutter. Thanks for any advice.

Mine, an African Outback full length, has a rubber pad that folds between feet surface and roof surface. HTH.

I cut a piece of plastic ice maker tubing down the middle and insert it over the brackets pushing down into the gutters. The part that goes under the gutter I use insulation tape and put in on the bracket side so it has a cushion against the paint.

the full length (one of the big pluses of this particular model IMHO) "foot" on my Kaymar is protected by a rubber sleeve.

Holy hand grenades Batman! That was quick. Thanks to all. I will look into something to line the gutter with.

I lost the rubber feet when I took it off to mount lights on it... Just put it back on and tightened it good. Doesn't move a single millimeter.

INTI rack - rubber feet here. Mudrak also gave me something a little more substantial. Don't remember exactly, but it's some type of trim that's rubber like with a stiffening piece of aluminum in it.

on my ARB, there is a metal gutter........ well, gutter guard; that sits in the gutter and your metal feet sit in this gutter guard which sits in the gutter. Clear as mud?

It's probably the piece that the ARB racks come with.

I have on mine (custom made)rack the rubber moulding that goes in the interior of the doors not in the doors it self but on the "body"of the car , it goes all arroud the doors , on old mazdas, and some yotas , it is hard rubber and inner metal "c"'s that allows the rubber to adjust to the door figure, it is much stronger that bare rubber.

My Yakima lockable bar clamps have rubber coated clamps on outside and an aluminum blade on inside of gutter. Can't add any more cushion to clamp because door clearance won't allow it. Might be something you want to watch, depending on location of your clamps. Best protection for gutters is: watch your weight up top and don't hit obstructions (like trees or low hanging garage door frames) with the rack.

Don't think so - he mentioned it being available at Home Despot.

I just use a piece of clear tubing inside the gutter on mine, slit lengthwise with a utility knife. Outside the gutter already has plastic... don't the rest of you guys have that plastic strip on the gutter?

Snagged mine wheeling through some brush on one side. Took a look at it and took me about a minute to decide to finish the job on that side (rip it off) since it was mangled already. Then went and "PM'd" other side.

Never worried about it, the feet on my "mule" brackets are about 4 inches long and they sit in the factory gutter wich is full of seam sealer (from the factory) so it is not metal on metal.

I absolutely love it. It is so adaptable and so strong.
I should have mentioned that on most models the black that covers the roof rail is some sort of plastic sleeve and that helps to "cushion" the two mating metal surfaces on its own but having a dedicated pad preferably rubber on each end works well. I've had no problems with mine at all and when I remove the rack you can't tell that it was installed - no deformities from the feet of the roof rack. HTH.

FJ60 rack mounted on LX450. Metal to metal but I'm going to do the rubber dip on the brackets to cut down on the noise/wear.
Question now is: to move the tire up top or not...

I don't know, I don't think I could get the damn thing up there by myself with out scratching the heck out of the side and/or roof. And then there's getting it down again when you need it, prolly by myself, watching it roll down to the bottom of the hill or into the creek or worse. Not to mention being indebted to a chiropractor when you throw your back out or sued by the victim when it became a projectile in an accident. Just don't seem like the best choice, to me. But, it's just my 2 cents worth, & I'm an old fart
