91 in AK, Won't go w/o Diff Lock engaged

Hi.

Just moved to Anchorage, leaving our 66 FJ45LV garaged in Maryland (sob)

We bought a 91 80 series last night, very cheaply, and now we need to make it right.

It will not go, there is just a spinning sound, unless the diff lock is engaged. I have a guess, but I could use an informed opinion.

3 Questions:
1. What would cause this?
2. Can a regular transmisson shop handle this?
3. Does anyone have contact info for the "Just Cruisers" shop in Wasilla? Or is it Cruisers only?

Thanks in advance.

Other than this issue and some neglected maintenance we need to catch up on, it looks like a great truck!

-Brian

Common item to check is the drive flanges on each end of the front axle. It's possible one is stripped out.

Mine did that when I broke my front axle. The CDL keeps all the power from going to the spinning broken stuff, or maybe just something isn't hooked up. Beware.

you need to figure out where the "spinning sound" is coming from.

Broken drive flange($45), or a broken axle/birf. Easy fix for a wrencher, not so bad if you've done it before. Doubt it has anything to do with the tranny

Too bad you weren't a little farther north,a nd I'd help ya out. SOunds like a stripped drive flange, missing rear driveline, or broken rear axle.

Brian, it is Cruisers Only. 373.3789

Probably a simple fix.
Call me. Pretty much 24/7 if it is about Cruisers

I'll have some more questions for you (including who you bought it from). Probably narrow it down a lot even over the phone.

Like others have said, missing driveshaft, stripped flange, or broken axle.... has to be one of these

All signs point to stripped flange. Mark was very helpful, and I am ordering the part Monday - looks easy and cheap to fix. He has some awesome cruisers up there!

I bought the truck for just under $2K - it has misc. dents along the drivers side, a cracked winshield (AK standard) and a LOUD exhaust leak. Interior is in good shape, and the paint is all one color. But it's perfect for my wife and kids this winter.

Thanks for all the help!

Mark - Thanks. I didn't find time to call today. But I did get an exhaust quote from Midas - $4,699. 2 cats etc. Criminy. Where would you recommend I look for a custom exhaust? I'm sure someone could build one way cheaper.

I'll be doing the front axle, (brakes, rotors & bearings) with the flange when it comes in. I'll call JP in the morning and get things rolling.

I am loving the truck - just don't want to break the bank on the way to making it right.

What makes you assume that you need all of that. It might just need the hole patched or a new section of pipe to replace the bad section. Midas will ALWAYS quote you for a full system and quote absurd prices. ALWAYS.

If you are tearing into the front end. now is a good time to put speedy sleeves on the axles and new axle seals too. Swap your Birfs side to side to get more life out if them while you have it apart. That rig can probably use knuckle bearings as well.

BTW, I forgot when we were talking the other day. I have some brand new winter tires, ready for studding and on rims. If you are looking. seems like you said you were. Give me a call if you want.

Mark - You are right. Midas = crazy. My tools are still in storage, so I haven't been able to even pull the heat shield off - but from peeking around, I think a little patch around the O2 sensor will do.

Speedy sleeves, knuckles, rotors, brakes etc... would you be interested? I would be in over my head, and you know the truck. I'll call you tomorrow to see what you think.
