Just bought a 1996 Land Cruiser FJ80

Just bought one finally after looking at what seemed to be a ton of them. It's black with gray interior. No lockers unfortunately :( The engine and tranny are sound, but it's got a few leaks that need to be looked after. A few questions for you ih8mud pro's:

* Where is a good source for OEM parts like gaskets and such? Any good pricing from a vendor/sponsor here?

* Where's a good source for a simple lift kit? The suspension on this thing is worn out and needs replacing. I need something for street/highway driving, dont do much offroading.

* Who makes a decent trim replacement kit for the interior? The fake wood crap is all faded and looking pretty gross.

A few pics. Still dirty as hell. The pics dont show, but the thing seriously looks like it hasn't been washed in 2 years.

Nice FZJ80

* Contact CruiserDan on these boards in the Vendor section at the top. He is a busy man but supports this whole forum admirably

* SleeOffRoad, Metaltech, ManAFre, any other vendor - grab an Old Man Emu (OME) medium kit (851/860)

* Can't help you on trim, but I am sure someone can. Try do an advanced search with "trim" in the title and see what comes up

Lastly, from one newb to another, gratz

oem stuff - cruiserdan at American Toyota in New Mexico - he's got an ad somewhere on here.
lift - there are tons of vendors who sell the OME stuff
As far as the fake wood trim - I, and many others just heated it up and pulled it off. It looks just fine (more utilitarian) without it.

Question 1- POC here on MUD is CDan, works at American Toyota, gets Mud members great prices on OEM parts and knows more about 80's than just about anybody. Look for the American Toyota link under the vendors section

Question 2- Slee Off road, check out Slee's site. Again under the vendor section.

Question 3- might want to use the search on this one to see what others have done.

Welcome and congrats
Let's see some pics

Pete

Thanks for the info guys. Glad to be back in a cruiser finally. I'll take some pics tonight and post them up. Just picked it up a few hours ago and headed straight to work, not much time with it yet. Definitely needs a good wash, the lady that owned it had tons of baby stuff in the back and it looks like it hasnt been washed in 2+ years (inside or out).

I gotta figure out whats up with the power seats too. The dam things dont move. I hear the motors working and the seats nudge a little, but wont move really.

Search for a thread by nakman. There are some little white thingys that you need to replace. I need two of them as well. I'll see if I can find the thread...

I used a heat gun to warm up dash trim wood grain and it came off real clean that way. Look on Ebay and search Land Cruiser dash and you will come across alot of companys that make full kits in any option. I am planning to order the brushed aluminum kit myself. They are ranging from $99-$140. Let me know what you find.

ebay has a bunch of that wood trim for your cruiser. I've also seen some trim in carbon fiber that looks nice but can't remember where. As above, I pulled all of that wood trim off and like that look better.

You can go OME for a stock height replacement kit that might get you .75" over stock if you don't want much of a lift.

Cdan quotes good low prices vs. local dealer and very fast response to questions.

I recommend IRBIS off-road for used parts if you dont mind from a parted out vehicle. Irbis is one of the vendors here on mud.

Very cool. I wonder if something like that is available for the up/down movement too. I'll have to do some good ol' searching.

If you don't wheel much, don't need/want the lift and want to rebuild the suspension, use the OME 861/862 stock height springs and some new Toyota shocks (actually made by Tokico). I just put this setup on my '94 and it was a great improvement. I wish I had done it sooner

The springs cost about $300 total and the Toyota shocks are about $125 for a set of four. Slee has the springs and CruiserDan can ship the shocks to you.

If I can lift it a little for not much more money I'd rather do that. Maybe around 1-2.5" of lift, nothing to crazy.

Then you probably go the OME Medium Kit as mentioned before. That's about $880. Shocks, Springs, caster correction, etc. And then, it might look a little funny so tall on the stock size tires, so you gotta buy new tires, and then.......

Stock Height OME springs and Toyota shocks is more like $475

It never ends...

Just ordered an OME medium kit with a steering stabelizer from Mark at MetalTech. Amazingly nice guy.
http://forum.ih8mud.com/%2A%2A-ih8mu...-out-sale.html

That takes care of that. Hopefully it's not too hard to install the springs/shocks. Now I just need to track down a few leaks and then get to the interior stuff.

Before the stuff even arrives, get a can of PbBlaster (or equivalent) and spray the heck out of every bolt you think you might touch in the process. Do it daily until the parts arrive. Give extra attention to the lower shock mounts on the rear.

Already have a 1 gallon jug of PB Blaster ready to go. I use it religiously on every car I've ever worked on. Never really done suspension work though. Is there any rough "how-to" for the OME shock/spring installation? The steering stabelizer looks like it should be a breeze.

I've added a few quick pics I snapped while running some errands today to the first post.

For OME install instructions, go here:

Slee - OME Suspension Installation (Toyota 80 Series Land Cruiser)

I just did this about a month ago. Not bad at all. Admittedly, I have done other suspension work and have air tools, etc. That makes it really easy.

By the way, where in Texas are you?

Thanks for the link, that Slee writeup is nice lacks good pictures, but that's enough to get me by. Might just have to take some pictures and do a little writeup myself

I'm in Austin, TX. Just a few hours drive from you.

Be sure to report back on that one...

Unless they changed it in the 80, it is next to impossible to do without exactly the right pickle fork/bearing puller (at least on my 62). The pins onto which the stabilizer is mounted are tapered. Bashing on it + a gallon of PB Blaster will not work.

A BFH & fork or a Tie rod end seperator is the ticket.

Nothing else to add other than wash that truck!

You should see the inside, still smells like baby diapers in there. I don't know how people expect to sell a car when they don't even bother cleaning it. I'll get on that sucker next week and give it a good cleaning and maybe grab some touchup paint from the dealer to cover up all the little nicks. Overall though, I'm really happy with it so far. Original paint on the car, not in the best shape, but can be good with some elbow grease, no body damage, no engine problems (yet), no tranny/diff issues. Only major things so far were the power seats not moving, really worn suspension and a power steering leak. There's also a lot of play in the steering, haven't been able to track that down yet. I'm wondering if the new steering stabelizer will fix that or if its something else. We'll see.

Pretty common for tie rod ends to wear out and give some play. If you're doing the lift & stabilizer, may as well.

IMHO YMMV

Steering stabilizers generally don't fix steering problems, but rather just mask them.

They'll be a set of 4. I.e. if you're going to do it, get the ones for the drag link too. All part of the same system.

IMHO YMMV

Received my seat gears/caps from user "nakman" a few days ago and both seats are 100% functional again. Thanks nakman!! http://forum.ih8mud.com/sale-parts/2...lugs-caps.html

While I was at it I pulled ALL the seats and ALL the carpetting out of the truck and cleaned/vacuumed everywhere. Disgusting I tell ya. Just all kinds of nasty under there. All clean now though, put a few coats of leather conditioner on too and suprisingly the worn seats look fairly good now. Just need to work out a few electric bugs with the rear doorlocks this weekend, get the old wood trim off and put the brand new wood trim kit on, and then the interior will be in pretty darn good shape and look/work like new.

Next week I'm going to try and find some free time to install the new Old Man Emu suspension lift kit that just arrived and start looking at what to do about the front passenger axle seal, and front passenger brake line that are both leaking. Lots of work, hope it's worth it in the end.
