Recirculating Air Problem?
The Texas heat is here in full force. I knew my A/C didn't blow near as cold as my other 80, that thing would freeze you out at idle. I was thinking about cleaning the evaporator via the fan hole. I was first stumped by the recirculating air flap in the bottom of the fan housing. While looking at how to pull the fan, I tested the recirculating to fresh button while looking at it and it does nothing. I then crawled into the floor board of my buddies 80 and watched his move. My wife took the truck to a mechanic today (we had a coupon for a free A/C checkup and charge from a booster club coupon book). My vent temp was 74 then he added a can and it dropped to 68, this was with water running over the fins to keep it cool. The mechanic said there was something wrong in the dash and he only messes with the under the hood stuff. Not much of a mechanic I guess. My theory is that the evaporator is super dirty from constantly running fresh air because the recirc doesn't work. The charge is right and the compressor seems to work. The little lights on the A/C controls work and correctly light up when switched to fresh and recirc. I would even be OK with rigging it to run recirc air all the time. Any all suggestions are welcome.
My specific questions are:
Is the recirc flap vacum or electric driven?
How do you pull blower fan?
Clean the evaporator (and not the aerosol foam stuff, I really want to clean it)?

On the LX at least the the flap is electric, pretty sure anyway. As an FYI, I just did ELMARIACHI's find for the evap cleaner and it made a pretty big impact on the a/c temps out the vent. It could seriously be that easy. Otherwise I've that the evap is a nightmare to remove.

Last night I pulled the bottom cover off of the fan and that alone made a big difference. It blows a lot harder now and little cooler. Anybody running without the bottom cover on the fan permanently?
I'm going to pull the blower fan this afternoon and see how it looks in there. If my recirc to fresh control motor is bad, I'll just move it to recirculating and leave it there. I don't ever use fresh air and if I want fresh air, I'll role down the window. I'm thinking about plugging the fresh air intakes as well to assure I don't get any outside air. Anybody else do something like this?
Where is the relay for the recirc to fresh motor?

Depending on how much humidity you deal with, you could end up freezing up your a/c system if too much condensation forms on the evap. j/s

I think that if I combined all of the time of every vehicle I've ever used the fresh air with the A/C on it might total up to 10 minutes and that's only because I didn't realize it was on. I've never had a system freeze up on me either and we have super high humidity here in southeast Texas.
Anybody have any ideas of how to block off the fresh air intake? Also, anybody leave the cover off of bottom of the blower fan?

Am I really the only one that has had this type of A/C problems?
