clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump?

Hey guys i need your help,

Today I'd just got home from school and had run inside to drop by bag off, and grab my rain coat. I was inside for 5 min. max and went back to start my 91 LC, and it wouldn't start. It cranks over just fine, and the battery and starter both sound strong. I am not getting any ignition though, I can smell fuel after cranking it ten times or so, but it does not smell flooded. Should i check the ignition or efi fuse first or does it sound like bad fuel delivery?

Thanks,
Kelsey

If you can smell fuel, I would start by checking for spark.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

After letting my rig sit for a few hours while I was at work, I came home and futilely tried to start it... and it fired right up. I am definitely getting spark, and it turns over fine, so my next question is: is it the fuel filter or bad gas?

Thank you for your input,
Kelsey

Bad gas doesn't really exist these days.

If it was "Bad Gas" after letting it sit it wouldn't just start right up. It would run really rough, acceleration would suck, etc.

Bad Gad would affect every aspect of driving not just starting.

That being said, I'm confused on your first part. You claim you could smell Gas while it was cranking. If the engine is cranking over just fine and you smell Gas, I would imagine it's not getting Spark. If you were getting Spark it would be sputtering and trying to start or something.

If you let it sit and it starts right up I wouldn't be thinking Fuel Filter, if it was clogged just sitting there isn't going to unclog it.

Fuel pump is a possibility, they tend to get noisy before they die.

If you have a local parts store that does the free electricial system checks I would take it there and have them check that.

Sounds like ignition to me.

Try checking the EFI Relay.

When I first bought my '91, it had an issue very similar to what you are describing. I did a little bit of reading and found that it seemed to be a EFI Relay issue. I bought a new relay, never had the starting issue since. Be sure that the new relay that you purchase has a metal housing like the factory Toyota piece. The first relay I purchsed was all plastic and didn't last long before it "melted down".

Best way to know if it's a EFI Relay issue: If your Cruiser is not starting, check to see if the Check Engine Light is lit when you have the key turned to the on position. If not lit, the relay is not allowing the ignition system to power.

Good luck!

Update

I have since driven around campus a few times and turned off my cruiser and have started it numerous times without a hiccup. I got under my fuel tank and had my girlfriend start it, and then let it run. As far as i can tell the fuel pump is not making any extraneous noise. I also pulled a plug and had my girlfriend turn over my rig and the spark looks very strong. I went to Radioshack last night and bought a voltage meter, so next thing is to check the distributer and fuel pump for proper working parameters. The efi fuse is also fine, but how do I check the relay, which wire is the problematic one?

P.S. It was raining sheets yesterday when this happened, we had at least 2" of water running down the streets and we had some real nice puddles. Any chance something got wet and shorted until it dried? If so what? I would appreciate any ideas on this, so i can maybe correct the problem with a little silicon.
