How to replace lights/bulbs in the shifter?

I have a 96 Landcrusier and the lights (bulbs) do not light up in the shifter any longer. The shifter is where we put the car in drive, reverse, park, etc, right? Mine used to light up, now it doesn't. How do I change/replace the bulbs? Thanks!

I think he means in the actual shifter - center console, not dash? There is one bulb in the shifter, below the P-D-N-R-1-2 plastic window. You need to pull the larger plastic console out to get in there, pretty simple process involving 4 outer bolts and maybe a few others. Unscrew the t-case shift knob so you can lift the console up a few inches. The bulb is in a green sleeve, condom-style. It is held in place by a plastic clip attached to the harness. You'll re-use the green sleeve, so carefully slide it off. Some spit helps...

You can order the single bulb at any Toyota dealer for a buck or so.

While you are in there, replace with LED bulb. Cant remember the number. Makes a big difference.

Yes, I am talking about the center console shifter. Does anyone happen to know the LED bulb I should use? Does Toyota sell that?

Is there a tutorial on how to get to the bulb? I read Mainemike's response above but he just told me what to do and I don't want to break anything by just getting in there and trying to remove things.

I have put George's LEDs in my dome lights, which are really bright. Not sure how much increased light I want from my shifter console, overall I prefer less light on my console. But maybe the LED is just for longer life? Totally happy that my D light is burnt out on the dash panel...

There really isn't much to getting at the bulb. Here are some links:
