another Beige 80 - Toyota Dune Beige
Specs: 1996 FZJ80. Converted 1HDFT/H151 5-speed. 200K miles. J-springs, BJ74 16" steelies, 285's, Labs rear bumper, Hannaquality sliders (missing in picts). Schlaker helped me remove nearly all the trim, bumpers, weatherstripping, and door panels. I welded up the holes from the fender flares, roof rack, spoiler-thingie, antenna.
Maaco did a... passable job. It's going to be wheeled, so i didn't need show quality. But, I did need to point out to them the flaws (drips, fish-eyes, overspray), three times until I was finally happy with it. But, now I'm battling a alternator gremlin from them killing my battery and jump-starting it.
Anyway, the price was right. Including all 5 door jams, skinning over all my welds, and a new windshield... it was $1100.
rear: Picasa Web Albums - Brian
front: Picasa Web Albums - Brian
How I bought it (with 1HDFT already installed): Picasa Web Albums - Brian
complete album: Picasa Web Albums - Brian - HDJ80

Scouring pad? That might b e the pict of the oil fume catch can (pict is in wrong album, that's not my catch can).
Maaco.
$1100 with new windshield.
Engine was a mess when I got the truck. Spent 3 months cleaning and fixing. I'm not that OCD; the cleaning was necesarry to fix some of it.
I hope I never have to lift that hood again.
Oh, and the Maaco was in Palo Alto, CA

GIFU, how much prep did you have to do to the truck before painting it?

Maaco wanted me to do as little as possible. They wouldn't let me sand. I removed everything to make their tape job better (easier). Most difficult job is re moving outer window felt/trim, and trim below sliding windows, and rear C-shaped trim, without breaking the clips. Luckily my friend Schlaker had just done this on his truck, and had mastered the technique.

Color looks good Brian. After awhile you won't even notice the runs and drips.
You gonna go scratch it up next week?

Wow, it's amazing what a difference painting the black window frames to match the body color does for the overall look of the vehicle.

I love the Dune Beige. My white paint (upon close inspection) is getting tired. If I repaint, I will seriously consider this color. Perhaps a bit darker.
Your truck looks great!

Gifu,
Awesome Rig! Truly one of a kind.
I read that you are running 285's, but what brand and model are they?

those are ATR's? America's Tire house brand. They are cheap, work great in rain/snow, and reasonably on the rocks. Quiet, too. I don't expect much out of the sidewalls... but the road hazard warranty makes up for that I guess.

intercooler is a ebay special.
pict here: Picasa Web Albums - Brian
even with the funny bends, it spins up fast, and never get's over 800F (pre turbo; 3" exhaust).
that perfect little adapter on the intake manifold... comes on a stock 1HDFT motor with EGR (it would have been the turbo-output to cross-over pipe connector... but they reused it at the intake).

Man that thing is nice!!!
Question: I thought the 1HD-FT had an intercooler stock? Your pipping looks custom so just wondering. I am somewhat depressed that you highlight the paint job (which is awesome) and act like the diesel is no biggy. Just kidding. Nice rig sir.

I thought dune beige was darker than that? Might be just the pictures though. Isnt Dune Beige a FJ40 stock color?

Pookiebear...I haven't heard of an 80 series coming stock with an intercooler. The ones I've seen have been aftermarket...?

It looks like the new FJC Dune Beige, not the older 40/60 color.

FJ60 isn't Dune Beige... it's just... Beige.
I haven't parked near Fah-Jay-Jay Cruiser to see if it's different. It has less yellow in it, I think.
who knows. Sherwin Williams had to custom mix it... and it might be off a shade.
