Welcome ! No, the VC is not necessary, just nice to have for slick roads. Since you already have the CDL switch, you're still capable of 4wd, even in HI. If yours is fried, do you know why? Common reason is not running same size tire on all four wheels. You can remove the VC (there's threads that will help), but if you want to replace it, be sure the problem doesn't still exit on your rig. Don't know cost of rebuilt or new, but the '91s & '92s don't have VCs from factory. Good luck on the sugar momma thing!
