alu drawer system home build
After done wooden storage system in my 70 I decided to make another for my 80.
Basic demands were:
- budget max 50% of factory build
- at least 100l of storage volume per drawer
- total weight not to exceed 60 kg
- possibility to easily make bed for 2 adults + child
It took quite a lot of time for me to find best compromise between size (especially height) of drawers and materials to use. Aluminum was obvious choice. I used 2 and 3mm plates. Sliders were quite a problem, budget didn't let me use one with full extension (1meter) cause they cost 320€ per pair. I had to buy 0,8m which costed 70€ per pair (they all carry same weight - 160kg, so I don't know why such difference in price).
Alu was welded by a friend of mine. Since I only had two weeks of time, cause we were heading to Sahara desert very soon, assembly had to be done very quickly and unfortunately there was no time, to develop some upgrades.
Costs so far:
Aluminium (40kg) - 200€
welding - free
Sliders - 140€
wooden plates - 50€
other small material - 50€
total costs: 440€

Welding went well, drawers fit perfectly
I decided to use wooden plate on top instead of coating
Two alu tracks were installed for cargo hold down.
Drawers in use on trip trough Sahara desert.
After being used on first trip I will continue with this project. I had to put some coating on front plates of the drawers, and also find some lockers for them.

nice work. is the extension panel over the seats level with the drawers and is there much movement or sag during/after sleeping on the drawers?

Extension panel was ment to be in level with the drawers. We put thin matress(140 x 190 x 5 cm) on that.

very nice work! I have been thinking about the drawer system and trying to keep it light. I thought about an aluminum frame only.
