Brown Davis Fuel Tanks?

Anyone have any experience with these fuel tanks? I was looking at the OEM aux tank mod. But I can get more fuel in one tank with these: 155L ~ 40 Gallons. And it seems like an easier mod. Swapping in one tank verses hooking up two.

Pics would be awesome!

Nope, nothing turned up in the search engine. I'm impressed by the 30ft fully fueled drop test that they describe. I've emailed the company and asked for more details and pics. This is looking like a very attractive option.

I like this idea over a second subtank and the associated wiring to run one. I am curious though how they manage to add an extra 60L (15 gallons) in the stock location. Pictures would be great

im guessing a $750 - $1000 price with a good 4 to 6" clearance drop.

With that said, I am very interested in this option.

They advertise minimal clearance changes. I've emailed the company and when / if I get any information or pics I will definitely pass ti on.

I'm hoping some of our Aussie mates will chime in.

I'm looking to set up an expedition rig so a little clearance lost would probably be tolerable.

I called these guys at 8:02 am their time and they answered. They were very helpful and answered all of my questions.

I found out that they do not make an auxiliary tank for the FZ...only for the FJ.

However, there is a demand for more capacity so they make a replacement tank that holds 175 liters is 46.230108925 gallons.

They are still checking to be sure it will fit perfectly well in to a US Spec 80 Series.

You must remove the rear spare underneath for this install.

------

Excerpts from the e-mails as follows:

------

This tank is a ‘replacement tank’, thereby meaning it replaces the factory tank. Auxiliary tanks run in parallel with the factory tank.

So for this model, there is no pumping from one tank to another, its simple a large main tank and that’s it. Fills via the standard filler, and reads off the factory fuel gauge.

------

With this tank, the large majority of the tank volume increase comes from the fact that the spare wheel is removed, which gives a lot of height to work with. With that in mind, the tank we offer basically then occupies the entire rear under section of the vehicle, from just below the rear floorpan of the back hatch area, down to a touch below where the standard tank finishes in height. So in reality you only lose a very miniscule amount of ground clearance as we make up for the volume by going up where the spare wheel used to be, as well as making better use of the areas alongside also. If you take into account the size of the spare wheel alone, it occupies around 40ltrs of volume in itself, so that is a major gain in volume for the tank already without factoring the space alongside this that is free and utilized also.

------

The tank is a bolt in, it does require a couple holes to be drilled, but there is no modification to the body of the vehicle at all.

------

The tank uses the factory gauge sender unit with a minor modification to the float arm which will enable the factory fuel gauge to work as normal. Gas/petrol is no problem either way, its designed for use with both.

------

As per prior email, price is $964AUD + freight (freight will need to be calculated upon ordering as we use a private broker for international freight which works out cheaper than mainstream forwarders). Time frame at the moment due to heavy work loads is around 2-3 week production time, and freight depending on method via sea or air, is 4-6weeks and 5-10 days respectively.

------

Here is the response I got from the company. I'm not sure who in the US military was / is using this in an 80 series LC. My guess is that the US and AUS version fuel tanks should interchange as the OEM part numbers are the same. I'll do some more investigation. Maybe a group buy is in order.

"Thank you for your email and inquiry with Brown Davis Automotive.
Unfortunately at this stage we don't have any images on hand for the US spec
vehicle. This tank was developed for use within the US military some years
ago now, and as such the fitment of these tanks was not used domestically so
images where not obtained. Although this tank could still be produced (with
approval of the company director), it would be a one off item.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. "

Filmpros - wow your post just popped up while I was typing. Great info! I'll see if they have a picture for the AUS spec version.

$946AUD = $629.76 US Dollars!

Since Filmpros has dragged me into this . I read through their web site and they spec ouyt an aux tank for the early FJ80s. This setup is a parallel one where you throw a single switch and everything goes over to the aux tank. That would be the stock fuel gauge and fuel pump operation. I'm not sure what is different back there between the later models and the earlier ones but since my son has a 91 80 I'm going to look tomorrow. I like this idea better than the transfer one but I'm not sure how the EVAP system will like it.

I to like this option as well. I jumped on this because I have a auxiliary tank on order with Man-A-Fre that I need to cancel if this is an option.

I can help with the group buy if Sun is OK with it. I spoke to these guys a few times on the phone and went back and forth in about a dozen e-mails with them today.

What they are asking for are pictures of the underside of the vehicle as described below. My Lexus 1997 LX-450 is with Landtank right now so I cannot take pics.

--------

We really need some detailed photos of the underside of the rear on your vehicle to confirm this at this point. We would like to clarify before we make any definite decisions.

If you can, take a few snaps of the rear underneath of your vehicle where the spare wheel is, and also under each side of the car giving us good detail of alongside of the chassis rail areas on both sides of the car. We may even be able to indicate whether you can run one of the secondary replacement tanks where the Australian domestic models have a auxiliary tank from factory. This opens up the potential to possibly run another 155ltr tank alongside this also. But without photo’s we cannot tell.

--------

Imagine that. 330 liters is 87.17677683000001 gallons. I would do this for sure if Slee's heavy rear springs can hold the weight. Do you think they can?

87.18 Gallons is 522lbs.

87.18 Gallons x 13mpg = 1,133.34 mile crusing range.

--------

This will make a good get-a-way vehcile for me for when the crap hits the fan...

Or, I can just fill up when I visit friends in NJ $(2.69) which is 0.40 per gallon cheaper on avreage than where I live ($3.29) in NY.

87.18 Gallons in NY = $293.40
87.18 Gallons in NJ = $234.51

Savings of $58.89.

Goofy logic, or perhaps justifcation in this case, I know. However, any reason to add something to upgrade my 80 Series is a good reason in my book...

--------

The tank quality is miltary spec. They build these for militray and the government. They did 5,000 tanks for the US to outfit vehciles overseas.

If I didnt still have the spare underneath I would go out and take pictures right now. I'll still do it unless someone else can get to theirs a little easier.

I have the same truck as you FILMPROS so looking forward to the possibility.

Yes, if I could take pics I would. My truck is far away from here at the moment. I want this tank if it fits....and the aux tank as well if I can fit it and the springs will carry the weight.

Filmpros - Since I'm in Okinawa, Japan right now and my 80 is in the states. I'd say go for it if we can get a group buy going!

Surely someone can come up with some pics!

Another reason to buy a Hanna or Slee rear bumper!

I wouldn't mind some more pictures of their bumper spare tire mount, that looks like an interesting design the way it goes underneath the bumper via a metal "strap".

I wonder what the difference is?

Landcruiser - FZj80 4.5ltr EFI FZJ80 Rep P 155 L80R4 4

Landcruiser - Wagon (indicate towbar) FJ/HJ80 Rep 175 L80R2 3

That's a 20 liter difference.

That looks like a really good option...I am hoping that we can work something out on this one...

In regards to the military customer comment...I drove a few U.S. military 80's that had large tanks on them...I am wondering if they were Brown Davis now...could be.

Am I missing something here...the tank listed on their site is referenced as 155 liters...which is approximately 41 gallons...where did the 330 liter reference come from?

Cheers.

- Mark
