locking diff retrofit???

Hey all,

Just bought this locking diff from craigslist for $80. the guy said that it is from the front of a truck. Can anyone tell from the pics, or how do I tell? I won't get into the details of how to retrofit this into my truck because I am going to wait until I regear to do it. I just wanted to show off my find and see what people think of it.

cheers!

joel

What are you doing with it and what truck did it come off of?

The front and rear differential housings on the 80 series are different sizes, IIRC 8" on the front, 9.5" on the rear.

So you may be able throw it on your front axle if it came off something that is compatible with your cruiser. Won't work on the rear if it's an 8" housing

That's a front FZJ80 hi-pinion e-locker. You stole it at that price, assuming it works. You've got it up-side down in those photos. It's too bad some hack cut the plug off the actuator.

Retrofitting involves welding and grinding on the front axle housing. There's many pages on the web on how to do this.

Thanks, I think that I will take some time to read up and gather info, then regear at the same time. I will also try to find an OEM rear locker as well, go Toyota!

I did it without the welding, holding up fine after 2 years and many trails. Some drilling and tapping is required, though. That's really the hardest part, keeping the new stud holes straight.

Nice score. I would wait to install it until you re-gear as well

I have an otherwise junk front actuator with a good harness. PM me your address if you would like it. Priority mail would be around 10.00.

Just finished my OEM retro this week. We'll need to install the actuator but the new axle is in. It really wasn't too bad. Not as easy as the rear but not too bad.
