so i get this sound when i accelerate

1994 type 80, stock other then 285's. 177k miles. had driver side birf repacked when seal went this time last year. right now my passenger side birf needs to be opened and new bearing put in and greased up.

i was under it this weekend greasing the drive line points. when i manually turn a wheel the other front wheel lags behind in rotation then there is a light clunk as things engage.

truck has factory lockers

i will order a new bearing for the birf and open it up soon to repack and so on, it will MY first time at it, guess i should get a brass hammer huh?

question.

what else should i look for
should i just replace bearing anyway ?
what other parts should i have on hand before i start
the clunk occurs if i accelerate like a taxi driver instead of smooth and steady
what else can i check to figure out where that noise is and if somthing needs grease, needs tightening or needs replace.

i have only wheeled it hard twice so far (with 2 big dogs, 3 kids and 2 adults and camping gear) and usually ride my bikes not the truck so it does sit for week or two in row with out going anywear...

thanks for thoughts

Wear on side gears/splines, inner axle splines, outer axle splines drive plates, birfields, etc.
Kinda hard to say a whole lot over the internet.

I reccomend you review landtanks thread(s) on front end assessment in the 80 series FAQ.
Cheers!

A lag between the wheels is to be expected. If you're concerned, drop the front driveshaft at the diff and rotate the flange both ways. See how many degrees it takes to get contact in each direction, but without turning the wheels. This is a rough approximation of gear lash. If it's more than a degree or 2, you might have reason to pull the 3rd and check for excessive wear. But I doubt it. Unless you ran the diff out of oil or have more than 500k miles on it.
Now if it goes 1/8 turn or more, you're definately into the diff for something.
Now, back to the issue at hand. Search for landtank's (or was it beowolf's?) writeup on front end diagnosis. It's very thorough and will lead you in the correct direction.

i must be drinking retarded coffee today, can't find jackalope scat, did the FAQ go away after the DB crash on this thing or what? ... could someone be so kind as to share a link to landtank's faq write up on front end?

i did this time around searching find some threads from 2004 about similar sounds while accelerating from hard stop... seems to be common. mentioned were lube drive axel splines, tighten from to body bolts, and the like...

Have you checked your front U-Joint? I just unexpectedly bought an 80 while the wife, kids and I were 600 miles from home and was getting MAJOR noise while turning and serious washboard vibrations. At first I thought it was the spindle bushings so I redid those in a Hampton Inn parking lot over a half day but the noise stayed after even after driving a bit to see if it would fix it. So then, in a Target parking lot I jacked up the front end and saw that the U-Joint had major movement. Not having a vise or a press, I pulled the front shaft and the vibrations and noise disappeared.
