One More Rear Cargo Storage Solution - w/Pics

Thanks to everyone that has attempted this and posted their builds here on mud! Tons of great custom work out there!!

I based the box off of charleston's design. I liked the height being able to complement a queen air matress with the second row seats reclined forward. I also liked the front longer storage area.

I initially went with piano hinges for the wings and front storage area but the carpet I chose to cover the box wasn't wide enough to cover without a seam...so I covered each main piece and found some cabinet hinges to mount underneath to keep the flush no hinge look.

I also ended up facing the drawers with tread brite and painted them Rustoleum satin black. Should be easy enough to touch up scratches.

Wasn't a hard thing to build but being my first real wood based project...took a good bit of time to get cuts the way I wanted. The phrase measure twice, cut once is engrained in my brain now .

Here are some pics of the finished box.

Now I need to decide on an inverter to mount on the side of the box below one of the rear wings...

-Jon

Great job

I don't have many 'in progress' pics. I wish I had though. I can take any specific pics of it now. Just let me know what angles you are looking for.

I installed it both ways and liked the finish around the front of the box and levelness of the total box without the rear carpet piece. I also used the factory tie down bolt holes to secure the box and this was easier without the carpet.

I have some left over carpet from the box covering that I'll probable cut and place in the areas under the side wings that show the floor.

Looks great. Want to build one but I am not sure how it would affect my dogs in the back.

Do you think those cabinet hinges will support ~100# with half of the weight on one side of the hinge and half of the weight on the other side of the hinge? Basically, it would be something that weighs ~100#, sits on top of the box, and straddles the hinge.

The front compartment (one close to the second row seats) should hold ~100lbs no problem (I've sat on it - ~150lbs of me). The top of this compatment is supported more so by the framing of the box rather than the hinges.

The side wings will need a bit more reinfocement depending on where the 100lb load is placed. Should be ok if the load is placed over the middle portion of the wing above the third row seat hardware. If the load is placed toward the ends of the wings then I wouldn't be 100% sure the way it is supported now. Should be doable though with a little creative support in these areas though.

I don't think the cabinet hinges offer any more/less support than a piano hinge...
