anyone know anything about this alarm?
I drove Land Tank Jrs truck home today and it's now time to start the small repairs. It's a 11/90 1991 80
First on the list is the factory alarm. This alarm has a key fob identical to the later units but has a dash pieces with a switch on it. The damn thing arms itself 3 minutes after you exit the vehicle. While that would be annoying enough it doesn't lock the doors so when you return the doors open readily and set off the alarm. Here is a picture of the dash for this alarm. Any insight would be appreciated. __________________ Rick Bigelow '96 215k Groveland MA 01834 If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes |

My buddy's 92 has that... He disabled it somehow, I can't remember how, though.

It looks like Horn Defeat and Valet mode, to me. I'm betting that Valet mode sounds the alarm if the locked glovebox or rear gate are opened while the switch is set that way, horn defeat probably allows only the flashing lights to set off. Some Lexus sedans have that stuff built into their fobs (that also have a detachable key). Is there a middle "neutral" position, or do you have to set it one way or the other? All I can say is the one on my 80 has driven me crazy in the past. I finally just disconnected the battery terminal, then didn't bother to reset it after reconnecting the terminal. Gotta manually lock the doors now but no more friggin alrms setting off in the garage!

A great time for L.T. Jr. to sign up at 3FE : Toyota 3FE group (FJ62, '91-92 FJ80) & post a plea! (non-members can't search: it's NOT MUD but it IS ALSO NOT PIRATE). I searched & found a similar post, but no responses (?).
They have filed the FJZ80 remote pdf (2.9 MB) & I could email it to you. Does NOT show a dash switch like you posted. Temp. mod: pop that switch & jump the 2 leads on the Alarm Defeat side of the plug w/2 male spades on a short length of 12 Gauge = should let power thru as though switch was absent (unplugging switch might do the same thing. NO ALARM, but no thinking you're thief. Might also be L.T. Jr.'s 1st opp to disassemble a Toyota rocker switch & remove typical carbon-arcing deposits? Good Luck! I learned nothing from my 1st auto purchase ('65 MG1100 = Austin America) other than how to correctly fill out a check. __________________ ![]() Joe aka 4XODDIC ( allow me to pronounce that for you: 4 By, Odd Eye, See! ) aka the One Eyed Guy Owning Toyotas Since 1975 TLCA 8537 99-00 Tundra LTD 4X4; 01-90 Samurai; 07-88 TinTop Samurai; 08-97 LX450 |

Thanks for the replies. The switch is horn delete and valet mode. The valet mode is a momentary switch.
I ripped out the unit and search the part number on Google, it brought me to MUD ![]() I went back and replaced the unit and the funky self arming went away. I haven't tried this but I'm thinking that if you arm the system while holding the valet switch it will put it in this self arming mode. The idea is that you would leave just a key for the valet as there is a timer switch (15 or 30 seconds) and he would be able to get in the truck and have that amount of time to insert the key and start the truck. I'm thinking that holding the valet switch and disarming the system would go back to normal. Right now it's just a thought and since it's working properly I'm not sure I want to screw with it any more. __________________ Rick Bigelow '96 215k Groveland MA 01834 If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes |

my 93 has the same alarm alarm. I thought it was referred to as the "tvss" system. Here is where I found info.

I looked through that manual and it is not the same unit. But they show a switch on the side of it for enabling/disabling it. I went out today and my original thoughts on this has proved wrong and the damn thing keeps arming itself after the last door is closed.

Rick I think Beo's manuals are hosted on the Slee site. You can turn off the automatic arming, I just don't remember how at the moment.
By the way, if you have a factory alarm in yours you can train the other button to arm his truck and vice-versa. __________________ Original owner 93 FZJ80,locked,blown,water/methanol injected(like a WWII fighter aircraft),lifted, winched, snorkeled, slidered,Sleeed ,moneypit. I am pretty sure valet mode is the mode in which the alarm does not self arm. I turn the ignition on and depress the valet and then turn the ignition off (while holding down the valet switch). The alarm should now allways be off unless you manually arm it with the fob? Otherwise, is there an unlabeled switch next to the reset button?

No switch for turning the self arming feature off, I even cracked open the case and looked inside. reading through the RS3200 manual it mentions turning the ingnition switch to "on" and holding both fob buttons down at the same time. I tried this and while I didnb't get the indicator light to respond as written the alarm after about 5 or so seconds went off. I then pressed the button twics and turned the car to the lock position. The alarm now activates with the fob and even after running the truck it doesn't self activate from what I can tell. If anything I might have reset the unit and passive arming is an "off" default so this might have done it.

I found my instructions (which are actually a hand typed account that where included with my 93 cruiser from the po). My 93 fzj80 has the same valet/horn defeat switch as in the photo at the top of the thread.
"The alarm arms itself automatically after 20 seconds (even if you did not press the button on the fob)" To deactivate this feature use the "valet mode". turn off the motor. turn the key to the acc. position and hold down the valet button until the red led comes on. the alarm is now in manual mode and will only arm with the fob. to return to "auto arm mode" turn the key to off then turn it to acc. and press the valet switch untill the led turns off. to keep the horn from beeping every time you arm your alarm keep the rocker switch in horn defeat mode. 1 beep and flash of the lights means the alarm is armed. 2 beeps means the alarm has just been unarmed. If you press the fob and the horn/lights flash 3 times then your trucks alarm went off while you where away. __________________ Doug -Bone stock IFS 94 22re mini (except for bumpers, sliders, skidplates, rear locker, 1" body lift w/trimmed fenders and 33" tires. -93 fzj80, locked, OME 851/860, deflared/linered, metaltech sliders, 285 Cooper stt's, http://tinyurl.com/6ovjzj -fj62 replaced by the fzj80 |

this is great info! The 93 I just bought has the same switch plus what I assume is the box that controls the alarm under the seat.
I'd like to rip the whole thing out, don't really need it. Thoughts on how to do this? __________________ Dave Windsor, Vermont '93 FZJ80 Elockers, MAF/OME lift, 35" BFG AT's, TJM Front Bumper, RockDog4x4 Custom Rear Bumper Yankee Toys |

The alarm was still a PITA though, it would re-arm if you disconnected the power (as soon as you reconnected it) and the only way to keep the alarm from going off was to use the key fob- you could actually get in, start the truck with the key and drive off with the alarm still sounding . Finally I got tired of the game and pulled the whole alarm (no one pays any attention to them around here anyway)

Firedog, is it easy to pull the whole thing? Can I just unplug that box under the seat?

my bad for not following up on this thread. I ended up sitting in the truck and turned the ignition to on. I then held both buttons on the key fob for about 15 seconds and the alarm started to sound. I then released the buttons and pressed the alarm on and then off. This seems to have reset the alarm and not it arms and disarms through the fob only.
I don't know why Dave you want to give the truck an alarm hysterectomy as the remove unlock is a nice feature and here in MA we get an insurance break because of the alarm. __________________ Rick Bigelow '96 215k Groveland MA 01834 If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes |

BTW, LT, with the way my alarm would go off as soon as you turned the ignition off (couldn't reset the time) and was just a general PITA, there is no way they could have given enough of a discount to make keeping the alarm worth while (...insurance is less that $300 a year...that alarm was about $1000 worth of hassle!) __________________ Keith '77 FJ-40 OME, ARB, SM465, Family cage, 33" Swampers, and lots of rust. Rick,
No fob so no remote unlock for me, at the moment my key doesn't work in the door either so I'm paranoid it will electonically lock me out or something right now. I've read a few key threads and figure I can solve that one though. Plus Kina may hav ea fob. Either way I'm not doing anything immediately, just gathering info.

Jr is on mud and he's like a caged animal in my back yard right now. Driving in circles and wearing out the lawn. His first priority is to cover up the stripe, which I think is a mistake.
Dave, fobs are readily available at the dealer for not that much cash and programming them is real easy. They can even be found on ebay cheap. __________________ Rick Bigelow '96 215k Groveland MA 01834 If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes |

turns out Kina has a fob so I'll wait and see how it works.
Lat night I read up on Key threads and will try getting a fresh cut key made and then lube up the locks with graphite. At this point I'm just doing searches on a myriad of little things looking for the fixes and updates. __________________ Dave Windsor, Vermont '93 FZJ80 Elockers, MAF/OME lift, 35" BFG AT's, TJM Front Bumper, RockDog4x4 Custom Rear Bumper Yankee Toys |
