Hypothetically speaking, what if I didn't?

I heard that my college roommate's aunt's best friend's brother had an 80 and he took his rear axle shaft out without locking the rear locker first, but then he put it back in just fine and everything was ___________

a) perfectly fine.
b) screwed, but fixable.
c) completely effed.
d) an opportunity to regear to 4.88s.

seriously, though - i did some searching and it sounds like it just might make it much harder to get the shaft back in if you don't lock it first? alvin (maddbaggins) is way worried that we screwed the pooch. i didn't even know it was a pooch.

what a rotor does to an alloy...

Finally got my truck back rolling - since school is back on I wear my teacher hat too often to get stuff done at home...

Anyway, here are some pics of the wheel that came off. This is what the rotor/caliper did to the alloy. It actually pierced all the way through at one spot, so the wheel won't hold air anymore.

In this pic you can see what the lug studs did before they gave way.

Here's the rotor - it took a beating from the asphalt.

At least the new wheels look good on my 80!

I still have lots to do before I take it wheeling again. I have lots of parts from American left to replace. Worst part about the whole ordeal is that I ended up spending close to $1000 to put her back on the road. I had big plans for that money

Hmmm, looks familiar.

At least your wheel stayed in one piece. Mine was sheared apart.

http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...ed-garage.html

And the wheel went over the median and took a tractor trailer out of commission. It had to be towed. Hit it in the grill.

The ABS sensor on that side was replaced, dust cover, e-brake, rotor, studs, wheel bearings, can't remember what else now.

Just be very, very glad no one was hurt or injured. I only imagine what would've happened if my wheel would've hit a car instead of a semi.

This reminds of a time my wife and I were shopping on I-45 south in Houston. We just stepped out of the sales office and we were headed to the car.

We heard a loud crash and looked over to the sound. An 18 wheeler had lost is PS front tire on the freeway (65-70 MPH) and the wheel had accelerated to a significant amount faster than the rig itself. The rig came to a grinding halt with sparks everywhere, so some people didn't even notice the wheel.
I was parked on the front line near the feeder, and this tire (now moved probably around 100 MPH) was heading to the right, straight where I was parked. I let out the obligatory "oh crap" and stood there and watched as the tire flew off the freeway, hit the feeder curb, bounced over 40 feet in the air (easily clearing our car) and through the middle of the pole sign that was about 20 feet up and then it came spinning across the parking lot, and slammed into the side of a suburban, completely obliterating the drivers and passenger's doors, and became wedged in the cab.

The force move the suburban about 4 feet and the thing was still smoking from the heat of the hub melting.

The sign that got hit now looked like a metal box perched 20 feet off the ground with wires hanging out of it and pieces of plastic all over the place.

Our car was safe, and no one got hurt, but it was one freaky day.
