Sub Tank Overhead Gauge reads Full?

I finally got my Long Ranger sub Tank wired. The overhead gauge reads 3/4 to Full when there is only 12 gallons in it (I only put 12 in it, to make sure there were no leaks and to have a small amount for the gauge to register).

Has anyone experienced this? When I fired it up for the first time, the needle rose slowly up to almost full and has stayed there.

This sub tank project is kicking my @ss! Your insight and experience would be most helpful.

When I bought my cruiser the sub was empty ( but really with 0 diesel on it .. ) so after a clean, i fill it up but the gauge only read half of the total ..

I start using it and in the process ( 2 years now ) it read acordly to the level .. so maybe it's only a tired lazy gauge ..

BTW 12 from 18 total galons are around 66% of the tank ..

I appreciate your post, but I should have stated that it's the 44 gallon Long Ranger tank. So, at 12 gallons it should not be reading full. You say yours took a little while to start reading correctly? Maybe that is what mine is doing?

What do you think?

I think it probably has something to do with the fact that you're using the OEM sending unit that was calibrated to work with a 13.5 gal tank. The tank is probably deeper than the range of the swing arm so when the fuel level is only partly up, the arm is already all the way up so it's reading full.

I have the OEM sub tank and my overhead gauge works perfectly and reads the fuel level pretty accurately.

Thanks guys. Census seems to say wait a little before I freak out. If the truth were known, I've been planning this mod since before I even had an 80 series to do it to.

It was one of the "Must have's" and a guiding factor in transitioning from the J**p world to the Landcruiser world.

Once again, I appreciate the insight.

I bet my factory subtank drinks much more diesel than 13.5 gal .. thought are 18 galons.

The readings on my overhead subtank gauge have been pretty sporadic. When I bought my rig the previous owner who did the install told me to keep a mental note of how much is in it based on how often you transfer to the main. With my 44 gallon sub, if I let the main get close to empty before transferring I'll get about two tanks out of the sub.

My overhead subtank gauge does take a while to react to changes in the level, but it seems the lower the level gets the more accurate it becomes. I know I've gotten pretty close to empty and the needle was reflecting that. Unless I'm heading out somewhere where availability is a question mark, I rarely fill it up at one station as it's just too painful. I usually spread it out over a few fill ups, adding an extra 5 gallons to the sub after the main is topped off.

That said, once they are topped off, it's great having that range. Nothing like having your main get towards empty and filling it up again while moving along.

If your tank was the same as mine, remember the sender had to be "modified" in order to work for the long-ranger tank. This maybe part of the issue.
Otherwise I would just cycle it a couple of times so the guage and sender can figure out where they are supposed to be.

Good luck.

Once again, Thank you Robb. I had Robbie (Powderpig) install the tank/sender while we were waiting for the pistons for the rebuild to arrive (Not as glorious as rebuilding a motor, but it was lancruiser related). I'll have to ask him if the sender was "Modified"?

One of these days, I'll make a run with you and the only issue we'll have is running out of tequila.

Thanks for all the help. The gauge is working fine now. I just had to cycle tank through. Yes, the arm was modified (I should have known).
